Step 4: Connecting Bag
Fold the bag in half, matching the right sides together and stitch down the side of the bag. This is the side that measures 13 inches. Stitch a 5/8 seem and then zig-zag the raw edge to finish the side of the bag. Press the side seam to one side and top stitch the seam down from the right side.
Step 5: Boxing Corners
Turn the bag wrong side out and line up the bottom of the bag and stitch the bottom of the bag with a 5/8 inch seam and then finish off the seam with a zig zag stitch. Then you will measure out a 1 inch square from each corner and cut away the corners. Match up the raw sides together and stitch with a straight seam and then zig-zag to finish the edges. Turn your bag right side out and with your fingers push out the corners.
Step 6:Top Casing
Measure 1 1/2 inches from the top of the bag and press forming casing around the bag. Do not stitch it yet. You want to attach the grommet first.
Step 7: Attaching Grommet
After the casing is pressed, open up the casing and find the center of the bag. Measure down 2 inches and using a paper punch create a hole. Insert the shank of the grommet into the hole. Cover the shank with the washer and insert . Place shank on setter and insert the anvil tool into the hole of the grommet. Make sure you are on a solid surface and hammer the anvil to flatten the grommet to sure in place.
Step 8: Finish Top Casing
Once the grommet is in place fold back over the top casing and stitch a straight stitch around the top next to the open edge.
Step 9: Insert Cording
Using a safety pin, pinned through the cord guide it through the casing. Be careful not to pull the cord all the way through. You want to have the start of the cord and the end of the cord coming through the grommet. You then use the cord stop and insert both ends through the stop according to the direction on the package. Then tie a tight knot to secure the cord. Once that is complete you can cinch the bag closed.
Step 10: Attaching Handle
The last step is to attach the handle to the bag. Take your bag strap and finger fold it in half and then fold each side to the center and press with either an iron or easy press. Once you have the strap pressed take it to your sewing machine and stitch down each side of the strap with a 1/4 seam. This will help re-enforce the strap. Now you are ready to attach it to the bag. Lay the bag flat and mark each side of the bag at the top of the casing. Then take the strap and pin it in at your mark on the inside of the bag. Take the bag to your sewing machine and carefully sew it in place. Making sure you are not sewing over the cording that is in the top casing.
Step 11: Finishing Project
You have now completed your curtain make-up bag. This same pattern could be used with another type of material. I just had so much fun turning my mistake into something! Here are a few of the bags I have made. Happy Sewing.
