Let’s turn a flop into a flip. Have you ever started on a project only to have it turn out to be a flop? You put hours into a plan, and then you make a mistake, and you end up with a flop on your hands. You think about not only the time that you have into the project but also the money. It is like throwing cash down the drain.
This happened to me recently. I decided to put new curtains up in our house. We have a beautiful French door going out onto our patio. I always fight with what type of window covering to put up. You see we have a cat that gets into everything and she is way too much full of mischief. I’ve tried shutters and Levolor blinds, and she always seems to find a way to climb up them and destroy them.
So I finally decided to try curtains. I went and got two curtain panels from Walmart. They were a beautiful gray with a darkening panel on the back as a lining. They did not have the exact size for my windows. But I knew that I could alter them.
When I got home, I double check my measurements. Once that was done I cut them to the right sizes. Next, I get out my sewing machine and hem the curtains to give them a finished look and create a tie back from my scraps. Once I am complete, I take the curtains to my family room to hang them up on the French door. I wanted to admire my handy work and show them off to my husband. So I put up the first curtain, and it looks great. Then I put up the second curtain, and I realize that I messed it up. The curtain is at least 6 inches shorter than the other panel. Turns out, I had cut the curtain to the wrong length and needless to say it does not look good hanging up.
My first thought is crap, I just ruined my curtains and of course we had company coming over! So down came the curtains! I knew that I could always go get another panel and fix it which I did do the next day.But I’m looking at this curtain and thinking this is a lovely piece of material. There has to be something that I could use it for. I can’t throw it away, and I did not have a smaller window in need of a curtain. This is a large amount of material. I think to myself okay what I can do with it? The curtain is a good weight and has an excellent lining backing.
At a recent bazaar I had purchased a makeup bag that I loved. I thought it would be great to make a few for gifts for friends, but I had not got around to buying any material for them yet. I knew that I could use the makeup bag that I purchased as a pattern. So low and behold that is how a curtain turned into a makeup bag. The first bag turned out great, and it was fun to turn a mistake into a sewing creation.
I am getting ready to go on a girls weekend, so I decided to make 12 curtain make-up bags. The first 4 bags came from my mistake, and the others came from other curtain panels. So the moral to this story is that there is a positive that can come from every mistake. You just need to let your mind be creative. I will be sharing the tutorial on my Curtain Make-up bags in an upcoming blog!
Thanks for visiting today and seeing how I turned a mistake into a creation. I hope that this helps to inspire you to create! Until next time have a great day!
