Creating the Stencil Design in Design Space
- Pick your design or use my stencil. Get access to my FREE resource library and the “Welcome to our Campsite” stencil here!
- If you choose your image, make sure you attached the images. Then resize it to the size you want. My mat is 16×30, so I did mine for almost the mat would allow me which a 12×24 mat will let you do around 15X10.5.
- Now just put the contact paper on your 12×24 mat and cut the image. Then weed out the letters. This method is called reverse weed.
Making the Doormat
- Remove the contact paper that you weeded from the mat.
- Center your stencil on the mat.
- Start to tape off the edges of the stencil with masking tape if you can, tape down as much as you can.
- I use sewing pins to pin down the stencil. Especially on the small pieces.
- Now it is time to apply the outdoor acrylic paint with a paintbrush. I like to use a stencil brush to start dabbing on the paint. Make sure you don’t take your brush up and down you need to dab over all the letters. The dabbing will help ensure a bright, crisp finish to your words.

- Remove the pins and contact paper carefully; you don’t want to drip any paint on the mat.
- Once you remove the stencil, go back and make sure you got a beautiful thick coat on where it is all black and no signs of the brownish mat color. I used a small paintbrush to touch up the letters.

Tips and Tricks
- Use contact paper to create your stencil. I bought mine at Walmart but, I’ve also heard contact paper from Dollar Tree works excellent too.
- Make sure to use outdoor acrylic paint. It withstands a lot better than regular acrylic paint.
- Don’t skip the pinning step. It helps keep the small piece in place when you are dabbing on the paint.
- Be sure and to dab your paint up and down when applying
- Let your mat completely dry before using it. 24-48 hours should be plenty of time.
