My memories of summers and growing up always involved playing games and spending time outdoors! Everyone enjoyed riding bikes, slip, and slides, playing lawn darts and twister, or just making up games. I didn’t makeup or create the Hook-It game, but it’s great fun for the whole family. My friends and family will attest to that. I just made one for a close friend for his birthday present. Trust me. Hook-It is an easy project, and an afternoon spent building it will be well worth it.
I’ve broken it down into seven steps that can serve as a guide, but there are no rules here! If you find an easier way to do any of this, go for it! On the other hand, if you prefer step by step guidance, I have it for you! My guide takes a simple approach that will get you playing out in the yard or in the house as soon as possible. All the tools and materials you need are listed below. So, let’s get started!
DIY Hook-It Game Set Materials
- Pine Round
- Design
- Sandpaper
- Picture Hanger
- Metal Hooks
- 12 Silicon Rings 6(red) 6(Black)
- Amazing Epoxy
- Maker
- 651 Vinyl
Step 1 BOARD PREP
I picked up my Pine round at Home Depot. The first thing you will want to do is sand your board. The take the pine round outside and spray two or three coats of spar urethane on it, following the instructions on the can The urethane allows the vinyl decal to adhere.
STEP 2 CREATE YOUR DESIGN
The basic design of the game will be the numbers, but if you want to customize your board, this is the time to create something. You could add a logo from your favorite sports team or a business logo. I added a business logo to the game I made for a friend.
I will provide the cut file in my resource library. Find it here DIY Mailbox Makeover!
STEP 3 PLACE DESIGN AND NUMBERS
Transfer your design and numbers onto the pine round. The number layout is predetermined, but the logo location is up to you! Just make sure you can see the numbers clearly when adding the logo!
STEP 4 HOOK PLACEMENT
Prefill the holes for the hooks above each number.
STEP 5 MIX EPOXY
Epoxy has precise instructions, and I have learned that you want to make sure you follow precisely; otherwise, the Epoxy may not harden for you.
- Use equal amounts of resin and hardener.
- Measure Part A into a small measuring cup
- Measure Part B into a small measuring cup
- Combine each part into a new cup
- Mix slowly for 2 minutes. I use a popsicle stick.
- Pour the mixed Epoxy into the tray
- This measurement turned out to make four tablespoons total, 2 of each, part A and part B
STEP #6 POUR EPOXY OVER ROUND
Once thoroughly mixed, pour the Epoxy over the pine round. You can use your gloved finger or stir stick to make sure the resin flows over the edges. I use my hairdryer or heat gun to pop any air pockets or bubbles.
Allow the Epoxy to dry for 72 hours. The Epoxy will provide you with a glass-like finish to your board.
STEP #7 ATTACH HANGER
Your last step is to add the hanger to the back!
GAME RULES
Once you’ve finished making your Hook-It game set, the real fun begins! There are five games that the World Ringboard Academy lists, but you know what? You can make your own game too! If you would like the official World Ringboard Academy list, I have it on my Resource Page. You can get access here!
