We are in a crazy time right now! The shortage of protective gear for our medical providers is scary. The coronavirus and the rapid spread are causing difficulty in finding personal protective equipment, including face mask. Even the hospitals are calling out for people to help sew face masks.
I saw the first call out Friday, and within hours the kits were all disbursed. I had a friend post on Facebook that she was making face masks to help the cause. The DIY face masks are not as effective as the N95 filtration mask recommended by the CDC. But they will add an extra layer of protection. I am even hearing that nurses are wearing them over their N95 masks to prolong their use.
Please do your research!
The DIY Face Mask is not a protection from the COVID19. It will merely an added barrier between you and the outside world. The tutorial of these masks come with the disclaimer. I followed the tutorial link below, which was recommended by a hospital. I do not know the exact effectiveness of the face mask, but I do know it provides an added layer of protection.
What the CDC says about Homemade Masks:
The CDC.GOV comments on homemade masks:
In settings where face-masks are not available, HCP (Healthcare Provider) might use homemade masks (e.g., bandana, scarf) for care of patients with COVID-19 as a last resort. However, homemade masks are not considered PPE {personal protective equipment}, since their capability to protect HCP is unknown. Caution should be exercised when considering this option. Homemade masks should ideally be used in combination with a face shield that covers the entire front (that extends to the chin or below) and sides of the face.
How to Make One!
So having said that, they are still a good idea to add that layer of protection. Plus, it can add a smile to someone’s face in these crazy times. I posted my first video on Friday night, and my Sunday, there is a shortage of 1/4 elastic! So below, you will see two tutorials. One how to make a mask and the second one is alternative if you can’t find elastic!

These masks are awesome!!! You make me smile Lisa!
How much elastic for child size?
5 inches
I’m glad you added the interfacing to the inside. It still isn’t 100% safe but does add a little more protection.
I like the ideas for hair bands. Yes, elastic is so hard to find. I’ve checked everywhere, no one has it.
This was so helpful! Thank you! The elastic I used is ironable so it can be used in hospitals when they use a heated sterilization process. I found it on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/listing/783738428/
