Summertime is fast approaching! Are you looking for a new look on your patio? Here is an easy DIY that you can do in minutes that will change the look of your patio. For that matter, you can also switch the look of your living room, family room, or even your bedroom. The easiest way to make a quick and easy change is with this envelope pillow cover. You can do it in just minutes! Learn how to sew an envelope pillow cover using one piece of fabric.
I love how pillows can change the look of a patio or room. As much as I love lots of pillows, I don’t love storing them all. So this inexpensive envelope pillow cover is a fantastic way of reusing your pillows and changing up your look.
STEP 1: MEASURE AND CUT
First, you need to determine the size of the fabric you will need for your pillow cover, measure the size of your pillow. Hint, you can look on the pillow tag for the size or use a tape measure to measure the size. My pillow is 18″ x 18″.
I found this formula and it works great. Take your pillow dimension times 2 plus 6 and this will give the fabric length. So, for an example, the formula for my length is 18×2+6 = 42. If you want your pillow to fit snug, don’t add any seam allowance.
Don’t worry if you are struggling with the math. I can help!
If your pillow is:
- 14″x14″ measure fabric 14″ x 34″
- 15″x15″ measure fabric 15″ x 36″
- 16″ x 16″ measure fabric 16″ x 38″
- 17″ x 17″ measure fabric 17″ x 40″
- 18″ x 18″ measure fabric 18″ x 42″
- 19″ x 19″ measure fabric 19″ x 44″
- 20″ x 20″ measure fabric 20″ x 46″
I have to be honest. I have not mastered a rotary cutter, but it is the best way to cut a straight line, and you want a straight line for this project! Your scissors will work, but make sure your cut is very straight!
STEP 2: IRON AND SEW
In this step, we want to finish the edges for a clean finished look on the back of your pillow cover. On the short side of the fabric, fold the edge under 1/4” and press. Then repeat the step. Now sew down the pressed fabric and repeat this for both sides of the short edge of you fabric.
STEP 3: CONSTRUCT PILLOW
It is time to construct the pillow. Lay your fabric down in front of you with the good side of the fabric facing you. Now fold each end of the fabric over itself so that it measures the size of your pillow. My square is 14″ x 14″. The finished seams from step 2 will overlap each other and create an envelope. Clip or pin the open ends of the fabric pillow cover and sew them closed.
STEP 4: TURN RIGHT SIDE OUT AND STUFF
Now it is time to turn your fabric pillow cover right-side out and push out the corners. Make sure to push out your corners out to create a good point. I like to use a capped pen to do this.
Stuff your pillow inside your brand new cover and admire your handiwork! Great job! You did it!
