This week’s Inspiration Friday project is a DIY project to make Mask Extenders with your mask scraps. It is inspired by my niece, our family hero, Kori! I saw a post the other day asking people what they were doing with all the scraps from their mask making. My pile sure is growing! Then about that same time, my niece, who is a Radiologic Technologist messaged and asked me if I could make her something that would help save her ears from her mask! So, it is time for another quick and easy sewing tutorial on making Mask Extenders!
I have seen a few variations of mask extenders, and this is just a quick and easy way to use up your scraps and supply a needed tool for our healthcare providers. I even took advantage and added a design on this mask extender with my Cricut Maker. You can use snaps or buttons for this project. I had purchased a snap kit last year and had lots of fun colors, so version number one is with snaps, and version number two is with buttons.
Supplies
- Scrap Material 3”x 8”
- Thread

Step #1 Cut Material
Using your scraps cut one rectangle 3”x8”
Step #2 Fold, Press and Stitch
Fold your rectangle in half. Your rectangle should now be 1 1/2” x 8”. Now you will stitch a 1/4 seam along the short sides and around the corner, leaving an opening in the top center of the rectangle.
Step #3 Turn, Press and Stitch
Once you have stitched, you will turn the extender right side out. Then press the extender and press the opening. To close off the opening topstitch all along the edge of the extender.
Step #4 Snaps or Buttons
Fold in the short edges of the extender in 1” and press. Now, if you are using snaps, insert the snaps 3/4” inch from the edge. If you are using a button, sew a buttonhole, and attach a button.
Step #5 Add a Design (Optional)
When you decide on a design, remember that the extender is small. Think about adding a name to the extender or maybe a heartbeat design like I did for my niece. The design I used on my first extender was part of Cricut’s Access subscription.
There you have it! A quick and easy project to help save your ears! I believe that masks will be around for quite a while, so why not make them more comfortable.
