It is hard to believe, but the new item we can’t live without is hand sanitizer. If you are like me, you have it stashed in your car and your purse. You want to have it handy after a trip into a store or even visit the post office! I have seen lots of carriers for the mini sanitizers online, so I thought it would be a fun sewing project. This week, we will sew a handy hand sanitizer carrier that will attach right on your purse so you will not lose your hand sanitizer, and it will be convenient to use.
As I was researching for this blog post, my husband commented that you should not leave hand sanitizer in your car. I asked why and he had heard that since it is alcohol-based, it could catch fire. So, I decided to check it out. Is it fact or fiction that it would catch on fire. The experts say:
Alcohol-based hand sanitizer is flammable but can only ignite if a flame is introduced. Although leaving small amounts of alcohol-based hand sanitizer in your car does not pose a significant fire risk, it should not be kept in vehicles because high temperatures can lower its disinfectant ability.
This Week’s Project
This week’s project is a great project that does not take a lot of material. So, it would be a perfect project to use up your scrap pile! Just think you can make one for all your family members, which is a useful gift during the crazy pandemic time!
The pattern that I designed below fits the Bath and Bodyworks PocketBac Hand Sanitizer bottles. You can adjust the pattern size to fit it larger size bottle if you have a different size bottle. I love all of the scents that Bath and Body Works offers, so that is what I like to use.
Click on the like below, and I will show you a step by step tutorial on making your Hand Sanitizer carrier. This week’s project is another project that calls for snaps, and I love to use snap kit! The last project that we used snaps on was the Mask Extenders!

Supplies:
- FREE PDF Handy Hand Sanitizer Carrier
- Design Space Handy Hand Sanitizer Carrier
- 18 X 6 inches of Material
- Swivel Clasp and D Ring
- Fabric Pen
- Thread
- Scissors
- Sewing Machine
- Snaps and Pliers
- Iron
- Felt Pad or Iron Board
Step #1 – Access Pattern
I have the pattern available two different ways. For all of you cricut owners you can access a file to use in Design Space and cut the pattern pieces on a piece of card stock. But, don’t worry if you do to own a Cricut. I also have a FREE PDF download file available to you here!
- Cricut Users, download the file and upload it to Design Space and cut out the pattern pieces on card stock
- PDF Users, print the file and cut out the pattern pieces. You can print the pattern pieces on copy paper or cardstock.
- HINT: I find that the pattern pieces cut out of cardstock hold up better and last longer!
Step #2 – Trace Pattern
Fold the fabric in half, rights sides together. Lay the pattern pieces on the fabric and using your fabric pen trace around your pattern pieces.
Step #3 – Cut Pattern
Cut out the pattern pieces. Since we folded the fabric in half, you will end up with two pieces for each pattern piece A and B.
Step #4 – Stitch Pocket
Place pattern piece A right sides together and stitch a 1/8-inch seam where it is indicated on the pattern piece. Then clip the edges of the curved end. Make sure not to cut through the stitching. Then you turn right side out and press the seams. The clipping that you did on the curved edge will help your fabric to turn and press nicely.
Step #5 – Assemble Carrier
Now it is time to assemble the carrier. The trick is to layer the pattern pieces. Layer one is Part “B” right side up. Layer two is the pocket from step 4, aligning the curved end opposite of the extended tab on Part “B.” The third layer is the other Part “B” right side faced down. I like to clip the piece together and then stitch a 1/8 seam as indicated on the pattern piece. Make sure to leave one side open so we can turn the carrier, as indicated on the pattern piece.
Step #6 – Turn Carrier
After you have stitched your carrier, clip your threads, and carefully cut small slits around each corner. Now it is time to turn the carrier right sounds out. There is a little trick to turning the carrier. You want to make sure the front of the carrier ends up on the front when you turn it. I like to feel with my finger for the curved end and make sure it is open and turn. I like to use a pen to help turn the flap.
Step #7 – Press and Top Stitch
Once the carrier is turned, I like to use my felt pressing pad and iron to give it a good press. The felt pressing pad retains heat, so when you iron your fabric it’s like ironing from both sides at the same time! This makes it faster to press and results in flatter seams. The flat seams are the key to a good top stitch. Make sure that you press in the side that you left open to turn. Now it is time to top stitch around the complete carrier.
Step #8 – Apply Snaps
Now let’s add the snaps. I like to use a snap color that matches my fabric. Remember when applying the snaps that you need two caps, one socket, and one stud and the snap pliers. I start with the flap end and push through the pointed end of the cap through the fabric, then insert the socket and press with the pliers. Next, insert the other cap in the inside of the pocket and push the pointed end to the outside and insert the socket and then press with the pliers.
Step #9 – Finishing Touch
In the last step, let’s finish this project and add a clasp of your choice to attach your Hand Sanitizer Carrier to your purse. I found my clasp at Hobby Lobby. It is their Nickel Swivel Hooks & D-Rings – 1/2″.
So, there you have it! Now it is your turn to make your very own Handy Hand Sanitizer Carrier.
