These little coin pouches are fun and easy to sew. This tutorial will show you how to make the perfect coin purse, or I love to use mine as my wallet. I like to carry a small bag, so this is the perfect size for your cards and cash. Or maybe you are going out for a run or running quick errands, and you don’t want to carry a purse. The continuous zipper is the hidden gem to this pouch! Have you had a bag that breaks a zipper? Not with this small pouch. I will show you step by step how to insert a continuous zipper.
I like to use upholstery material for my coin pouches. Last year a furniture store was going out of business, and I got full sample upholstery swatches. The swatches are perfect for making these pouches. I match the upholstery fabric with a contrasting cotton fabric for the lining. You can also find samples of upholstery swatch books on ebay.
It is also fun to add a contrasting zipper, or maybe you like to match your zipper to your pouch fabric. I buy a pack of zippers on Amazon so I always have some on hand. You will need a zipper longer than 11 inches for this project. I like to buy 16 inch zippers in bulk. This length gives me plenty of room to make a larger coin pouch too!

Step 1 – Cut Fabric
I like to layer my upholstery fabric and lining fabric and use my acrylic ruler and rotary cutter to cut my pattern out. This process makes sure that both pieces are the same size. Cut out both pieces 10 1/2 x 5 inches.
Step 2 – Prepare Zipper
Layout the zipper and cut off both the ends of the zipper. Make sure that you have over 14 inches of zipper left. I like to start with a 16-inch zipper. The longer zipper allows for enough excess to work with on this project. After you have cut off the ends of the zipper, you want to pull it apart. We will only be using once side of the zipper.
Step 3 – Sew in Zipper
Lay the zipper face down on the outside fabric and then put the lining face down on the zipper. Then line the straight edge of the zipper with the top edge of the outer fabric. I like to clip the materials and zipper together to make sure they stay in line. Attached the zipper foot on your sewing machine and sew a close seam to the zipper. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam.
Step 4 – Press and Top Stitch
A good press always makes for a good topstitch. Press both sides of the fabric, making sure that you press close to the zipper. Make sure that the right side of the materials are out and topstitch close to the zipper. You want to make sure the top stitch is very straight.
Step 5 – Insert Zipper Pull
Matching wrong sides together fold the fabric and match the zipper ends together. Beware, this the hardest part of the whole project. You need to insert the zipper pull into each end of the zipper. Just take your time, and it will be worth it!
Now zip the zipper halfway. CAUTION: Do not close the zipper all the way.
Step 6 – Sew Pouch Together
This step will make sure you have a beautiful finished look on your pouch inside and out! Now, lay out the fabric right side up and fold the long side right sides together. Now it is time to sew our pouch together. Starting at the corner of the outside fabric sew all three sides stopping three inches from the end of the lining fabric. This step will allow a hole to turn the fabric right side out.
Step 7 – Turn and Finish
Before we turn the project right sides out, clip the corners, this will allow for beautiful edges of the pouch.
Now it is time to turn your coin pouch right sides out!
I like to use a pointer to poke out the corners.
One last step to finish up the project, hand stitch or machine stitch the opening in the lining shut.
Then push the lining into the pouch and zip it closed. You now have an adorable little coin pouch or wallet or whatever you want to fill your cute small bag pouch!
Now that you made a little one, why not try and make a bigger one. Just think using the continuous zipper steps you can make your self a make-up bag or a pencil pouch for examples. Let me know what you think. What other types of pouches will you make?
