So glad you could join me for another Inspiration Friday. This week’ project is a Scarf Mask. It was inspired by Jeri. Jeri is one of the owners of ISH PNW, a little shop in my local town where all of us crafters sell our creations. It is just the cutest shop, and I love it.
Here in the state of Washington, it’s mandatory to wear a mask. You can’t go into a business unless you have a mask on. So Jeri has to wear a mask all the time, and she said,
Lisa, I’m looking for something more breathable. You know, I’ve tried the standard face mask and I’ve tried Gators, but I need something less constricting.
So I have been doing lots of searching for her to see what might be a good option. I found these cute scarf masks. It is just a lovely little scarf, and it has ear loops. So, you can either wear it just hanging down and it’s breathable. Or if you want to tie it and have it as a cute little scarf, you can also do that. And then if you’re not wearing it, you can just fold it back down and there you go. You’ve got an adorable scarf.
I’m excited to show you this project. As I was doing my research on this project, I found that there are lots of YouTube videos out there on it, but most of them are showing you how to draw the pattern.
What I decided to do is, make a pattern for you guys to use. I’ve got two ways that you can get it. One, it’s a PDF and the other for all of my Cricut users out there, I put together a design that you can upload to Design Space and cut the pattern out using your Cricut. So either way, you want to do it, I want to make sure that you guys have the opportunity to make these cute scarf mask.
Please do your research!
I want to make sure all you know that this is not a medical mask. A scarf does not work like that – or for emergency healthcare workers. This is an option for people that are potential transmitters and want to add a layer of protection and keep germs out. So, for a quick and easy tutorial on making a scarf face mask , check out the video below.
The CDC calls on Americans to wear masks to prevent COVID-19 spread. This is just one alternative.

Before we get started, I want to tell you about the Adjustable Elastic Cord I have listed above. They showed up on my Facebook feed. I decided to order some and try them out. Amazon states the following about them:
-
Made of high elastic polyester fiber, which have good resilience allow them to restore the original length without deformation. Effectively reduce the pain and pressure of wearing a mask in the ear for a long time.Wear it in the most comfortable state.
They’re super soft, and they’re adjustable. I have used them on a regular masks yet, but I have put them on the scarves, and they are so nice. The elastic cord is comfortable behind the ears, so I recommend getting some if you need to wear your Mask for a long period of time.
FREE PATTERN
I have two options for the pattern:
#1 – CRICUT USERS PATTERN
The link above will take you right to Design Space and the patter. I would suggest you don’t cut the fabric with your Cricut. I like to cut the pattern out with Card Stock. It just makes it nice to cut out with my rotary blade when I’m trying to cut out a lot. In the case of Design Space, it’s going to come in three parts. You can see parts A, B, and C. So all you need to do after Design Space cuts it out for you is tape it together, and you’ve got your pattern ready to go!
#2 PDF PATTERN
But don’t worry, for those of you that are not Cricut users, I also went ahead and traced it onto regular paper for you. There’s a part A, B, C, and D. So, all you need to do is download the PDF, print it out. You are going to have three sheets of paper. Print out the pattern pieces, then you want to cut your pieces apart, and then you’re just going to tape them together.
ASSEMBLING THE SCARF MASK
Step #1 Cut Fabric
After you have assembled and taped your pattern pieces, it is time to cut out your fabric.
You will cut out two fabric pieces on the fold.
Step #1 Place Ear Loops or Elastic
Align the ends of the ear loops with the dots on the pattern piece. The ends of the elastic or ear loops should be 2″ inches apart. Clip in place. Repeat on the other side.
Step #2 Clip and Sew
Now that you have the elastic or ear loops in place, it is time to assemble the Scarf. Take the other piece of fabric and place right sides together clip along the edge of the Scarf.
Don’t forget to leave a space to turn the Scarf right sides out, I like to leave about a 5″ opening. I mark it with two clips, so I know when to start and finish my stitch. Don’t forget to backstitch at the start and end of the seam to secure it in place.
Step #3 Clip, Turn and Press
Clip each of the 5 corners making sure not to clip through the seam.
Then clip the rounded corners to allow the edge to lay flat.
Turn the Scarf Mask right sides out and press the edges.
Step #4 Top Stitch
Once you have your Scarf Mask pressed, it is time for the final stop to topstitch and closed the opening that we used to turn the Scarf Mask right sides out!

Hi Lisa, thanks for posting this pattern, was easy to follow your directions. I had to sew on velcro at ends to secure, not enough material to tie ends. I also made a mistake on the length of elastic. So I took out stitches to put in correct size for me. I also used what fabric I had on hand and ended up with 2 pieces to sew together, I needed to open this seam to get into seams to take out elastic, anyway I left it open to place a filter inside mask area. It might move around but I’ll either tape it in place or use a paper towel to cover the whole area. I’ll figure something out. Stay safe. Thanks again, TLH
