When I first started my blog, I posted a DIY tutorial on turning a flop to a project. It was a make-up bag made for a curtain. Today I want to share with you another Make-up Bag. This time we are going to start with just a Circle!
My aunt made a small circle bag for jewelry when I travel, so I thought it would be fun to make it a little bigger and use it for make-up. It is excellent for travel since it can lay flat so you can see all of your make-up. Then pull it closed and secure it and take it with you!
So, I thought it would be fun to make a bigger bag that I could make from cute fabrics. These will make great gifts.
I start with an 18 1/2″ in diameter circle, but you can make whatever size you want. Remember, a small bag makes an excellent bag for jewelry when you are traveling.
Vinyl Coating Options
I want to share with you two options for making a layer of fabric waterproof with a vinyl layer. The first option is a product that I love to use to make fabric waterproof. The product is OdiCoat. It is a Waterproof Glue Gel. If you check it out on Amazon, the highlights are:
- Allows you to protect your projects fabric accessories or objects (cotton jeans lace muslins)
- Once dry it creates an insulating film that resists against stains and humidity inside and out
- It can be used as an adhesive for fabrics or on all wooden cardboard metal glass ceramic pottery Styrofoam and stones.
The second option is a iron on product by Pellon, called 102R Fuse Vinyl. If you check it out on JoAnn’s, the highlights are:
- Pellon® 100 Vinyl Fuse™ is an easy to use product that adds a clear protective gloss finish to fabrics. It features a gridded, removable paper-backing for easy measuring.
- Great for projects such as cosmetic bags, children’s toys, bibs, and more!
You can buy laminated fabric, but the choices are limited. So with Odicoator Pellon Vinyl Fuse, you can laminate any material. I like it when the lining fabric is laminated for make-up bags, so they wipe clean so easily. You can also make the bag without laminate fabric.

Step #1 Create a Circle
I fold my 2/3 yard fabric in half and then in a quarter. Using my ruler I measure 9 1/4″ from the corner creating marks that make a 9 1/4″ arch. You can see this in detail in the video linked above.
Step #2 Cut out Material
Cut along the dots you make in Step #1 and then use the first circle to cut out the second circle and the Pellon Fuse if you are using the vinyl option.
Step # 3 Apply Pellon Fuse
Follow the directions on the package of Pellon to apply it to the right side of your lining. The video linked above gives you a step by step process for applying the Pellon Fuse.
If you are using OdiCoat move to the next step. If you are using Pellon jump to step #5.
Step #4 Apply OdiCoat
Applying OdiCoat takes a full 24 hours to allow for drying time. When making a few Make-Up Bags, I cut out all of the circles in step #2 and apply OdiCoat to all of them at once.
The OdiCoat will be applied to the lining fabric. I line my workspace with parchment or wax paper to apply Odicoat.
Using a paintbrush apply an even coat of Odicoat to the right side of the lining fabric. Let the coat dry 1 hour and then apply another even layer and let dry 1 hour. Then apply a third coat and let dry 24 hours.
The next day when the fabric is dry, the last step is to set the fabric with a cool iron set on the Silk setting. I also attached the fusible fleece with this step. The Fusible Fleece will be attached to the wrong since of the lining fabric. I like to press it with a pressing pad for about 30 seconds.
Step #4 Insert Grommet
You can work on the step while the OdiCoat is drying or if you are using Pellon Fuse there is no drying time. The Grommet will be inserted into the bag outside the fabric. Lay the circle out in front of you and measure down 1 1/2″ from the top edge of your bag. Mark the spot with a fabric pen. Either using scissors and a hole punch make a small hole. See the video tutorial for step by steps instructions on setting the Grommet. You can also follow the directions on the package to set the Grommet.
Step #5 Layering Make-up Bag
After your OdiCoat is complete or you have applied the Pellon Fuse, it is time to layer our fabric together. Take the Make-up Bag outside fabric and lay flat right side facing up. Lay the Lining Fabric right side down and clip or pin to secure the two. I found that pinning works best since the vinyl lining is slick!
Step #6 Stitch and Turn
Stitch the two pieces together. I use a 1/4″ seam allowance. Leave a 3″ opening in the circle so you can turn it right side out. Make sure that the 3” opening is not near to The Grommet.
Turn the piece right side out.
Using your iron, gently press the bag piece so that it is smooth. Make sure to press the outside of the fabric and not the lining with the vinyl finish.
Step #7 Top Stitch
It is time to add the topstitch. You will be adding two rows of a top stitch that all create a channel. I like to use a non-stick foot on my sewing machine when I use any laminate or OdiCoat treated fabric. I use a 1/4 seam allowance for this first topstitch. Make sure to “catch” the 3” opening with this topstitch. You will topstitch around the entire circle.
The second top stitch is 1 1/2’ from the edge. Stitch completely around the circle making sure to backstitch at the start and end of the topstitch.
Step #8 Adding Ribbon or Cording
Now it is time to insert the ribbon or cording in the channel we created in step #6. I use a safety pin and thread the ribbon or cording through the Grommet in the “channel” the topstitching created.
Once you have it feed through, insert the ends into the cord, stop and tie a knot. Now it is time to synch up the Make-up bagKeep threading it until you get back to where you started. Feed the ends of the ribbon cord through the cord stop and pull up on the strings to “gather” up the bag.
There you have it a perfect make-up bag for travel or everyday!
