This week’s inspiration Friday is another one inspired by my niece Chloe. She told me making Scrunchies would be an excellent blog idea and that everyone loves Scrunchies.
Scrunchies are lots of fun to wear and easy to make. They can be an essential item if you have long hair. I use them for a ponytail, bun, or just a bracelet, so I have one ready for a ponytail! So since Chloe inspired me, I had to figure out how to make them. This is a great beginner sewing project and great for gifts. I have even heard of girls making them as a fundraising item!
Let get started on what you will need for this sewing project! Scrunchies are a great way to use scraps.

Here’s a short video on how to make scrunchies. You can watch it here, or you can scroll down for the step by step instructions.
6 Steps to Making Hair Scrunchies
Step #1 Cut Fabric and Elastic
Using your rotary blade or scissors cut out a strip of fabric 4” by 24”. You can make the width wide or narrower if you would like. I just found that I love this width. Then cut a piece of elastic 6 1/2” long. I used 1/4” elastic, but you could also use a wider elastic. Check your stash and use what you have on hand!
Step #2 Prep Fabric Ends and Sew First Seam
Layout your fabric wrong side up and measure in 2 inches on all four ends of the material and press in the fabric wrong sides together about 1/4″. We will use this in a later step to help finish off the scrunchies.
Then matching right sides together pin at the 2” mark on each side.
Now it is time to sew your first seam. Start the seam where your pin is at one end. It should be in 2” from the end. Start your stitch and then do a quick backstitch to secure your seam.
Then stitch along the ends. I like to use a 1/4’ seam, but you could use a 5/8” seam. Make sure to stop at your next pin, which should be 2” from the other end. Don’t forget to backstitch to secure your seam and clip your threads.
Step #3 Turn Fabric and Press
Thread the safety pin through the tube we just created, and turn the fabric right sides out.
I like to press the Scrunchies during this step, but you don’t have to, it is your choice!
Step #4 Insert Elastic
Now it is time to insert the elastic in the tube we created in step #3. I like to pin one end of the elastic to the fabric, and then using a safety pin, I thread the other end through the tube.
Once you have the elastic through the tube you now take both ends of the elastic and overlap them about 1/2″ and sew a zig-zag stitch to secure the elastic. I like to go back and forth quite a bit. You don’t want your elastic to come apart in your new scrunchies!
Step #5 Close off Ends
Now that you have the elastic inserted, it is time to close off the ends. Take the ends of the fabric and with right sides facing together stitch a seam. Use either a 1/4” or 5/8” seam. Remembering to secure your start and end stitch with a backstitch.
Step #6 Finish Seam
Our last step is to close off the opening. This step is made easier because of step #2. Remember, we pressed the ends in. This will help give you a nice clean edge to sew your scrunchies shut. You can just sew a seam where the opening is, or for a fun accent, you can sew a seam all the way around your scrunchies!
There you have it a cute scrunchie! Chloe and I had so much fun going through my fabric stash to make lots of scrunchies!
