Fall is in the air, and time for a change. Do you want to update your throw pillows? Remember our Envelope Pillow earlier this year? This week’s project is another fun way to add some seasonal decor to your rooms! My DIY Fall Pillow Wraps are super easy to make.
I love Fall, and it is almost here. The leaves are starting to change, and the mornings are cool and crisp here in the Pacific Northwest. I see everything from Fall, Halloween, and even Christmas décor in the stores. What a great time to create a Fall Pillow Wrap plus I will show you how to make it reversible to add another seasonal décor to your Pillow Wrap!
I picked up a Pillow Wrap at a bazaar last year that was embroidered. I loved that it opened up a way to change my décor without a lot of expense. Just think of what you could do for your Holiday decorating!
Have you looked at the prices of decorative pillows lately? I have seen them range anywhere from $25 to $60.
I will show you an option to decorate your Pillow Wrap using Sublimation, but you could also use Heat Transfer Vinyl, or if you have an embroidery machine, you could use that too! You decide, either way, these are just so cute and easy to make! So, let’s get started creating a Pillow Wrap!
Here is a video tutorial on how to make these cute Pillow Wraps or you can scroll down for the step by step instructions.
Pillow Wrap Supplies:
- ½ Yard 100% Polyester Outdoor Fabric
- ½ Yard Contrasting Fabric (I used 100% Cotton)
- Thread
- Sewing Machine
- Clips
- Iron
- Rotary Cutter
- Cutting Mat
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Sublimation Paper
- Sublimation Ink
- Printer
- Heat Press
- Snaps
Step #1 – Measure and Cut Pillow Wrap
The first thing you need to do is decide what size of Pillow Wrap you want to make. I like to make my wraps 9 inches wide, so I cut the width to be 10 inches to allow for seams. To determine your pillow wrap length, I like to measure my pillow and add 3 inches to allow for snaps! My pillow measured 36 inches around. So I cut both my fabrics to be 39″ x10″.
Step #2 – Sew First Seams
Now it is time to sew our first seams. Lay the fabric you cut out right sides together.
You will sew a seam down the length of the material on both the top and bottom. Make sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of your seams to secure them. I used a 5/8″ seam allowance.
Step #3 Press Your Seams
This is an essential step, and I would encourage you not to skip it. Press open your seam allowances on both sides using your iron.
Them turn your Pillow Wrap right sides out and press the seams again.
Step #4 Close off the Ends
Now we want to add a finished look to the ends of our Pillow Wrap. I tuck in the ends and press them with my iron. I usually only turn in the ends about 1/2′”.
Then I topstitch the ends.
Hint: If you are using different colors for the front and back of your Pillow Wrap, you might want to use matching thread in your bobbin and needle of your machine. For example, in my Pillow Wrap, I used white thread in my bobbin and red in my needle.
Step #5 Add your Snaps
I like to add three snaps to my Pillow Wraps. I use my snap kit from Amazon for this step! Here is a link to a video showing how to use the snap kit. I use three sets of snaps for each of my Pillow Wraps.
Step #6 Applying your Design to you Pillow Wraps
Now it is time to add your design. The design I used is linked in the supply list if you would like to use it. I designed it in Cricut’s Design Space software. Then I printed it off using A-Sublimation paper and printing it in a mirror layout. I applied my design using 390 Degrees for 90 seconds. Check out the video to see this step in detail!
