This week’s project is another one Inspired by my niece Chloe. She told me that I needed to do a tutorial on how to make easy headbands. She informed me that EVERYONE wears them! So, I asked Chloe what type of headband we should make? She created a Pinterest board and narrowed it down to 4 Easy Headband styles that she loves!
Headbands are not only great for keeping hair out of your face, but they also add a splash of color to top off any outfit. They are easy to make, and the best part is you can customize them to any color or size you want! Just pick out some fun material and determine the size and style you want. This tutorial is going to give you a standard size and the standard size fit both Chloe and I!
Making headbands is another excellent idea for gifts. Headbands would also make another item to add to your next bazaar table. Even if you are just a beginner sewer, you can make these! So, let’s get started, and I will show you how easy it is to make four different types of headbands. These are Chloe’s favorites; The Bow Headband, The Turban Headband, The Covered Headband, and The Knot Headband!

#1 Bow Headband
Step 1: Cut Fabric
Cut three pieces of fabric and one piece of elastic. One piece of fabric 16 x 6 1/2 inches, one piece of fabric 11 x 3 inches, two piece of fabric 4×12 inches and one piece of elastic 6 inches.
Step 2: Create the Bow
The first thing we need to do is make a pattern piece for the bow. Take a piece of white paper 6 X 4 and fold in half the long way. When it is folded, you should have a piece of paper that is 6 x 2, and the folded edge is on the 6″ side.
Measure up 1 inch on the 2″ side and make a mark. Then measure in 3/4 of an inch and make a mark. Take your pen and start at the opposite end of the markings and make an arch that meets the other end’s marking. See the picture below.
Cut out the Bow pattern piece. The fold your 4 X 12 piece off fabric right sides together and cut out two bow pieces.
Step 3: Sew the Seams
Let’s start with the Bow. Place your bow pieces right sides together and clip. Then fold the other two pieces in half lengthwise with right sides together and clip. Sew the seams, as shown below.
Turn each of your pieces of the headband rights sides out and press.
Step 5: Add Elastic
Take the fabric piece that is 11 inches long and thread the elastic through the opening with a safety pin or bobkin and secure the ends.
Step 6: Assembling
Lay the 16-inch piece of fabric seam side up. Lay one end of the elastic on top of the fabric and center on the ends. Fold over the end to cover the elastic. See the example below:
Do the same for the other end of the elastic and attach it to the other end of the fabric and turn out.
Step 7: Add the Bow
Now it is time to add the bow. Find the center of the headband on the opposite of the elastic we just attached. Place your bow under the band and tie a knot to secure the bow. See example below:

#2 Turban Headband
Step 1: Cut Fabric
Cut two pieces of fabric 17×7 and one piece of fabric 11 x 3 inches one piece of elastic 6 inches.
Step 2: Sew Strips
Fold your fabric right sides together along the long side of each piece of fabric. Sew a 5/8 seam down the long edge of the fabric. Turn each piece of fabric right sides out and press.
Step 3: Add Elastic
Take the piece of fabric that is 11 inches long and thread the elastic through the opening with a a safety pin or bobkin and secure the ends.
Step 4: Assembling
To construct the turban effect on this headband, you will need first to lay one strip down and lay the other strip on top of it, making an + with the fabric. The seams side should be on the top and bottom. Fold the strip on the bottom in half and pull the other strip in the opposite direction. This should create a turban effect. See the example below:
Lay the strips flat and clip the ends with the seams facing inside. Center the elastic strip in the middle of one of the ends. Wrap the strips over the elastic and sew a seam to secure. Turn the fabric right side out. Repeat on the other side. See the example below:

#3 Covered Headband
Step 1: Cut Fabric
Cut one strip of fabric that is 3 times the length of your headband and 2 times the width of your headband.
Step 2: Sew Seam
Fold the fabric in half with the right sides together on the long side. Sew a seam along the long side and at one end.
Step 3: Assembling
Thread the tube you created in step #2 over the headband after you have entirely threaded at the tube over the headband fold under the open end and add a little bit of glue across the opening.

#4 Knotted Headband
Step 1: Cut Fabric
Cut one piece of fabric 22×6 inches and one piece of fabric 11 1/2 x 3 inches one piece of elastic 6 inches.
Step 2: Sew Strips
Fold the fabric right sides together on the long side and sew a 5/8 inch seam. Using the Bobkin or Safety pin turn the strip right sides out and press
Step 3: Tie Knot
Now it is time to form the knot for your headband. Lay the strip down seam side up. Tie a knot in the middle of the strip. Do not pull the knot to tight.
Step 4: Assembling
Lay the strip of fabric seam side up. Lay one end of the elastic on top of the fabric and center on the ends. Fold over the end to cover the elastic. See the example below:
Do the same for the other end of the elastic and attach it to the other end of the fabric and secure with a zigzag stitch. The turn it out!
