I’m so excited to share with you this Countdown to Christmas Tree! I remember as a kid, every year on December 1, my mom would hang up my countdown calendar. My Grandma made it for me. I remember the green felt hanging on my wall with little candy canes attached with tiny pieces of yarn! Each night I would untie a small candy cane. As I ate my candy cane, I knew it was one day closer to Christmas.
So I thought it would be fun this year to put together a calendar to count down the days to Christmas and decorate a tree. So on Christmas Day, we would have a decorated tree!
This inspiration Friday project is inspired by a countdown tree that I saw at Lowe’s last year.
I thought it would be fun to use some doorknobs and some wood and create my countdown to Christmas in the shape of a Christmas tree! I can’t wait to share it with you and show you how fun it was to make!
So let’s get started on learning how to makes this Countdown to Christmas Tree! Check out the video tutorial below or follow the step by step instructions below! You choose how you want to learn to make these Countdown to Christmas Tree!

Step 1 Assemble Wood Base
I used some wood leftover from my reclaimed wall. I added two 2×4’s too attached my three boards. This step will secure the wood together and be the backdrop for our Tree.
Step 2 Paint Base
I wanted my background to have a whitewashed look. I used Waverly White Chalk Paint and a foam brush to give it a whitewashed look.
Step 3 Create a Template
Before I started drilling holes on my base, I created a template on white butcher paper. I placed the doorknobs on the butcher paper and arranged them how I wanted my Christmas Tree to look. Once I had my design, I used a pencil and made a mark on the butcher paper. Then I transferred the design to my baseboard.
Step 4 Pilot Holes
Using my drill, I made a pilot hole where each doorknob will be on my Tree. This step makes screwing in the doorknobs much easier.
Step 4 Attach Doorknobs
Screw-in each of the Doorknobs in the pilot holes and tighten them.
Step 5 Make Tree Decorations
To create the tree decorations, I used present tags and silver cardstock. I added 1-25 on the silver cardstock and then sandwiched string between the present tag and cardstock.
Step 6 Add a Tree Topper
The last step is to add a tree topper. I added a star ornament that I picked up at the Dollar Tree.
There you have it, my take on a Countdown to Christmas Tree.
