Step #1 Cut Legging
Layout the leggings and measure 20” from the bottom of one leg, and cut across the portion. The section you cut out will be your Gnomes Hat!
Step #2 Close off Hat End
Turn the section of the leg that you cut out and turn it inside out. Take a piece of string and tie it around the section’s raw edge and tie a knot to close off the end of the hat.
Step #3 Add Pom Pom
Turn the hat right side out. The end of the hat that you closed off is where you will be adding the pom-pom. Apply hot glue to the end and apply the pom-pom.
Step #4 Cut Beard
Before we cut the beard out, I want to talk about how to cut the fur to get the best look. When cutting faux fur, you make tiny snips on the fabric’s back and avoid cutting the faux fur. You want to make sure not to cut the faux fur, just the backing. It will result in a blunt look of the beard. I have also used my Cricut True Control Knife with a sharp blade to cut the fur backing. Here is a template to cut out your beard. I used this template for the first couple of times, and then I could freehand the beards.
Step #5 Attach Beard
Now it is time to add the beard! Make sure your glue gun is heated up. Very carefully apply a line of glue to the inside of one side of the hat and carefully lay down the fur, fur facing down on the hot glue. Flip over the hat, and you should have a beard attached to your hat.
Step #6 Add Nose
Now it is time to add the nose! I think this is where your Gnome get’s it’s personality! There are different options of what you can use for a nose. I have used ping pong balls, styrofoam balls, and small pom poms, but I like to use wooden balls the best. I lay the hat and beard down and add a dab of glue in the hat’s center where the hat and beard meet. If you can lift the rim of the hat a little, that is good. That way, the nose will be covered by part of the hat. Once you have added the glue, lay the wooden ball on the glue, and let dry.
Guess what! Now it is time to put your topper on a bottle. So grab a bottle of wine or your favorite spirit and pull your topper over the top! You can add some embellishments to your Gnome if you like. Another cute idea is to take a vase and fill it with your favorite candy and pull a bottle topper of the vase, and you have a perfect gift.
