This week’s Inspiration Friday project was inspired by one of my subscribers, Christina. She asked a question; I hope you can help. How do I make a gaiter from polar Fleece with a flannel liner? My son does plowing and needs something warm. I also want to make a smaller one for my grandson, who likes to help shovel driveways. So, I went to work and put together this tutorial. This blog post will give you detailed step by step directions to make a winter neck warmer/gaiter made out of Fleece.
These winter neck warmer/gaiters provide warmth, and they are great with a hat or a helmet. My sons and husband loves to wear them for hunting and fishing on cold early mornings. They are also great on the ski slopes!
This is a beginner sewing project, and I will teach you how to make a warm and comfortable fleece neck warmer/gaiter.
Another fun thing about these excellent winter neck warmer/gaiters are that kids like them. When my kids were young, I could not keep a scarf around their neck on cold winter days. This neck warmer/gaiter is an excellent solution for anyone that does not like to wear a traditional scarf.
SUPPLIES TO SEW A WINTER NECK WARMER/GAITER:
This is a great project to use up leftover Fleece from a previous sewing project. This project is a simple rectangle. I also have a few size options for you for both adults and kids!
CHOOSE A SIZE
- KIDS SIZE 19″ x 8″
- ADULT SIZE 21″ x 10″
So let’s get started on learning how to makes a Winter Neck Warmer/Gaiter! Check out the video tutorial below or follow the step by step instructions below! You choose how you want to learn to make these Winter Neck Warmer/Gaiters!
STEP 1 – CUT NECK WARMER/GAITER
Cut two pieces of the selected size. You don’t need to add any seam allowance, it’s already included. Before you cut your fabric, let’s make sure we have the fabric’s stretch going the right way. You want the long side of your fabric to be the way the fabric stretches.
Cut one piece from Fleece and one piece from Knit Jersey material.
STEP 2 – SEW EDGES
Take both pieces of fabric and place right sides together. I like to clip the long edges of the material.
You can also use pins to secure the edges.
Then I use a 1/4″ seam allowance. Make sure you use a stretchy stitch. A simple zig-zag stitch works excellent! Once you have sewn both long edges, you will have a long tube. Make sure you can slide your arm through the tube.
STEP 3 – SEW TUBE EDGE
Now it is time to pull one end of the tube into the other end, keeping the right sides together and matching up the seams. Sew around the edge, making sure to keep an opening.
You will want to leave the opening on the knits side or lining side of the fabric. This way, your closure will be on the inside of the neck warmer/gaiter. The opening will be used for turning the neck warmer/gaiter right side out.
STEP 4 – TURN RIGHT SIDE OUT
Turn the Neck Warmer/Gaiter right side out through the opening we left in the previous step.
STEP 5 – CLOSE OPENING OF NECK WARMER/GAITER
Our last step is to close the opening. I like to use a zig-zag stitch to close the opening, but you could also hand-stitch the opening closed.
