It’s another Inspiration Friday and I want to take you on a Craft Room Tour. In fact it is my new Craft Room. Craft room organization is an essential part of crafting because supplies left in disarray can leave you feeling stifled and uninspired. Unfortunately, keeping things tidy is a huge problem for so many crafters, including me! I finish a project, and I don’t always pick up right away. Just because you’re creative doesn’t necessarily mean you’re organized. Lots of creative people can be quite messy at heart.
I was fortunate this past year and was able to create a brand-new craft room! I call it a labor of love. My original craft room was an extra bedroom in our house, and it worked out great initially. It was a graduation up from the dining room table! But as Fun Stuff Crafts has grown, and my crafting and sewing have grown, my husband commented that I need more room! Now let me tell you we live in the country and my husband has a fun hobby of classic cars, so we have lots of outbuildings or garages. He offered one of his bays of garage as my new workspace.
So, our journey began in August, and by October, I was in my new “Happy Place.” So no more excuse for disorganization since I have ample space!
I should state that this was a journey. You need to understand what it looked liked before!
So, even if you’re the most disorganized crafter on earth, there are ways to change behaviors and be both inspired and organized. I want to show you my new space and share a few of my Do It Yourself craft room organization ideas to help you consider how to arrange, use, and display your supplies.
Organization can be the key to inspiration. If you’re a crafter by heart, you’ll know there’s no beating a sound organizational system. Otherwise, you risk wasting valuable hours digging through drawers, tubs, and closets for your supplies. I have been there! But I am trying to turn a new leaf, especially with my new space.
When I started planning for my new craft room, I decided that if I set up my craft room with a separate section dedicated to specific craft or sewing, it would help me with organization.
Craft room organization doesn’t have to be ugly or boring. Craft rooms should be light and inviting. As I said before, I call my craft room my “Happy Place.”

I want to take you on a tour of my room. You can view it through the video LINK below or follow along below as I visit each area of my craft room.
Section #1 Sublimation
My newest craft is Sublimation. Sublimation is the craft that helped make my new space a possibility. My husband loves what I have been making with Sublimation so much that he was spending more time in my old craft room that he determined that I needed more space!
This area is in the front corner of my craft room. The space is all set up around my Heat Press. I have it sitting on a Rolling Cabinet which, I use to store some of my sublimation supplies. Next to the rolling card are two cabinets that I bought at Lowes. I wanted both doors and drawers on my cabinets. The countertops are from Home Depot, which is a Butcher Block Countertop. The countertop is a perfect spot for my Epson 7720 Sublimation Printer. To help protect my countertop, I have a Cricut Mat that slides under my printer.
One thing you will see in my craft room is numerous places are Garbage Cans. I have found that having a garage can handy really helps to keep my area tidy. So I found a slim Garbage Can that fits between my rolling cart and my cabinets.
One item in my room that is larger than I had planned was my TV! We joke at our house that you can tell that my husband went shopping with me on the TV. Even though it is bigger than I planned, I love it. As you will see later on in this blog post, my desk is at the other end of the room. So, a big TV is great!
Section #2 Sitting Area
I had not originally planned on having this little sitting area, but I love it! The cute chairs were a Christmas present from my husband. He found them at our local TJ Maxx. I added a cute Ottoman/Table w/Storage between the chairs. It serves as both a table and storage. It is empty now, but I am sure I will find something to store in it! I also keep my Ring Light in this area.
Section #3 Paint Area
Our next stop is the paint storage area. The paint area is the last space that I have completed.
The wall called for a punch of color. It was fun to use my paint bottles on shelves to add that color. I tried a few different ideas and landed on this layout. I started with a Cabinet I already had and added the Ikea Peg Board system that I already had from my old craft room. It is always good to repurpose items. You don’t need to buy everything new! I purchased the Acrylic Shelves to add to my pegboard system, and then I added some cute little buckets that I already had for paintbrushes.
Section #4 Cricut and Paper Crafting Area
As we move around the room, our next stop is an area that I designed around my Cricut Maker. I love using it for many different crafts, and I wanted it and all my accessories within arm’s reach. This area started with determining what cabinets I wanted and how I wanted to lay them out. I first started with a list of what I wanted to store in this area, and then I selected the cabinet layout. The items I wanted to store were my Circuit and my paper supply, vinyl supply, and accessories. So I decided on two base cabinets and two upper cabinets. I also placed a pantry cabinet on either side of the base and upper units. We used the same countertop for this area. You will see that I have done that throughout the room.
Now let’s talk about some of the storage ideas that I have used in this area. To store my vinyl, I added Metal Drawer Pull-outs to one of the pantry units.
My pantry units were so deep, so I add the Metal Drawer Pull-outs so I did not have any wasted space. I then picked up some baskets for vinyl storage. You will see that I have three shelves full of vinyl. The first shelf is Cricut’s Infusible Ink. The next shelf is full of standard vinyl, and the last shelf is heat transfer vinyl. I use Storage Tubs in the upper cupboards to sort and store some of my craft tools and supplies.
The Dollar Tree Trays are great to help organize my drawers. You will see them in almost all of my drawers.
In the other pantry cabinet, I have all of my paper. I love to use Magazine Holders to sort and store my 12X12 paper pads. I use a small storage tub to sort my scrap paper.
Section #5 Desk and Work Area
The next stop is my desk area and where I have my desk. I already had my desk, and I loved that it was an adjustable desk. I bought it a couple of years ago at Habitat for Humanity. Initially, I did not think I would have enough space for the desk. But it all worked out, and it fits perfectly. This area also services as my “Real” job works space. Some of you may know that I am a banker by day part-time.
Luckily, I can work from home, so I wanted to make sure I had this space all set up for both work and crafting and designing. Once again, you will find a Cricut Mat on top of my desk, also with my work computer and my personal MacBook Air, and an Epson ET 4700 Printer. Under my desk for storage, I have a couple of storage items. I have Ikea Drawers and a Cubicle, and next to my desk, I have a tall Ikea Drawers unit next to my desk. In each of my drawer units, I have more or my Dollar Tree Trays. I wanted to add some display area to the wall above my desk, so I decided on three white shelves. I
Section #6 Closet
My closet wall was so much fun to do. I wanted to add an accent wall to the room. We had some fence boards on hand, and we purchased some extra and add vinegar and steel wool to create our reclaimed wall! We topped them off with Barn Doors from Home Depot!
Once you enter my closet, you will first see my cute little Mini Fridge, Sink, Coffee Cart, and my Keurig. You will also see my Convection Oven, which I use for Sublimation. There was not enough room at the Sublimation area, and I don’t use it that often so I thought the closet would be an excellent place to put it.
To maximize my storage area, I added more wall Shelving and a few Under shelf Wire baskets. I use a variety of Storage Tubs to sort and organized my craft supplies. One organization tip to consider is trying to keep supplies in separate containers or drawers.
Before you think that a ton of individual compartments will cost you a ton, remember that these containers can be something like repurposed mason jars or something you would find at the a Dollar Tree store. I love The Dollar Tree Trays. They provide endless organization possibilities.
On one end of the closed, I have a Lowes Base Cabinet for some of my larger tools, and the other end is a Lateral File Cabinet to store some of my extra material. The majority of my fabric I have sorted and stored on Foam Boards and in plastic bins. I love having them so handy and sorted by color and type.
Section #7 Sewing Area
Now is it time for my sewing area. If COVID did one thing for me, it was to help me rediscover my love of sewing. I have sewn since a very young age. My mom was a seamstress in her native England, and she taught me to sew, but I have not done a lot of sewing over the past couple of years. But 3,000+ masks later and numerous gaiters, I have remembered why I love to sew. It is just one more way to create things!
I have the same countertop in my sewing area and we added some Workbench Legs to make my sewing tables. Then, of course, I have my Sewing Machine and my Serger. Under my countertop, I have added some Alex Cabinets and Ikea Drawers. I have my drawers loaded with Dollar Tree Trays. They work great for organization.
One idea I love is adding a Tape Measure to the top of my counter. That way, I have a tape measure at my fingertips.
I added a pair of matching Chairs and then added a Pressing Pad on top of one of my Alex Cabinets. I have a tutorial on making one. You can find the LINK here.
I also added a Cricut Mat to protect my countertop. I also added a Roomba to my craft room to help keep it clean. Next to my sewing station, I have another Pantry Cabinet to store my mailing and packaging supplies. Next to the Cabinet, I have a 4-Drawer File Cabinet that to my Dad.
I added a coat of white paint to it, and I feel that I have a piece of my Dad with me in my craft room. One other addition we made to the craft room was a heat/air unit. We installed a mini-split. It has been great to have it on some of these cold Pacific Northwest mornings.
Section #8 Crafting/Sewing Island
The center focal point of my craft room is my large center island. I went through lots of different ideas but landed on this island with the help of my husband. We started with a Butcher Block Countertop that you will see throughout my craft room as my countertops. My husband did lots of research and found some great Workbench Legs that are very sturdy to support my large tabletops. I decided on two tops to make the size of the island that I wanted for crafting. My island is 50″x98″. We did add some Risers to the legs to give them a little more height. We finished off with some great Stools from Amazon. Eight stools seemed like the best number because I would love to have in-person crafting classes sometime in the future.
My journey involved cleaning, building, up-cycling, and lots of re-organization. The end of the journey has given me a craft room that is a functional workspace! I love my “Happy Place”, and I feel inspired to create. I hope I’ve given you some good ideas for craft storage and organization.
