Valentine’s Day is the Day of love and a great day to decorate with hearts. You can use felt or card stock paper for this Simply Sewn Heart Garland, and it could not be easier to make.
This project was inspired by my new friend Chelsie. We had a crafting night last week making some heart Garlands for her boy’s rooms! Chelsey told me about another great way to make a Garland by sewing the hearts. Simply Sewn Heart Garland is such a fun project and great for even a beginning sewing! You just need to know how to sew a straight line. Once you make one, you’ll want to make one for each holiday! Saint Patrick’s Day is just around the corner!

I recommend using card stock. You can use single or double-sided card stock. For the felt, I recommend craft felt.
Step #1 Cutting Hearts
If you are using your Cricut, I recommend a heart that is 2 1/2″, or if you have a heart punch, you can punch away! I went through my paper stash and found three different patterns of paper to use. Picking the paper took me the longest part of this project! Depending on the size of your garland will depend on the number of hearts you need. I made 28 hearts to start with, 7 of each pattern.
Step #2 Sewing Ribbon Tabs
I added a ribbon to the ends to help make hanging it easier! To do so:
- Fold a short piece of ribbon in half and sew a half-inch or so where the two ends of the ribbon meet.
- Do not cut the thread.
- Keep sewing right off the end of the ribbon and several stitches forward, so you have a length of “sewn” thread before the first heart.
Step #3 Sewing Hearts
Before you start adding the hearts, you will want to decide on your pattern. I like to stack my hearts in the design I decided on. This makes it so easy and fast to sew them together. So now take your first heart and put it under the presser foot. Sew across the heart from side to side somewhere in the middle to the upper half of the heart. Set your stitch length a bit longer than usual if you want fewer holes in your paper.
Sew past the edge of the heart. I tried to space my hearts apart about 1″ or 5-7 stitches, so keep sewing past the edge of your heart about 1″or 507 stitches. Then repeat the step and work through your hearts to create your garland.
Step #4 Add Ribbon Tab
To finish, sew a length of thread after the last heart and then add another ribbon to match the garland’s beginning. Trim your thread, and you have it! A Simply Sewn Heart Garland!
For another version of this simply sewn heart garland, you could sew your hearts from top to bottom to have a garland hanging in your window or doorway.
To add a 3-D effect, you can place two hearts back to back, with the paper’s right sides showing. Sew from top to bottom, and when you finish sewing, you can fold the hearts out to make a heart with four sides. See the example below!
I hope you try this project! It is really easy and a cute way to decorate for any holiday or an added decoration for a shower or even a wedding!

[…] The button heart makes such a cute Valentine decoration. I put mine on display in my craft room. Last year I made a heart garland that also makes a great decoration. You can check out that post HERE. […]
