Sewing is one of those things passed from generation to generation. I know it was for me. I was fortunate enough that I had a mom and grandma that loved to sew. They passed that love onto me. I learned so many great sewing tips from them, and I have also learned many along my sewing journey. So today, I wanted to share 10 Sewing Tips that are my favorite. These simple tricks will also help keep you stay organized and add to your sewing skills!
Tip #1 Tape Measure
Years ago, I saw this idea, and I originally epoxied a tape measure on my sewing machine table. When I finished my new craft room, I knew that I wanted to add a tape measure to my workspace. I found these adhesive back tape measures on Amazon, and I love them. It is so handy to have it right in front of me when I am sewing! I have two—one on each of my sewing workspaces. I love it so much that it is Sewing Tip #1!
Tip #2 Magnet Pin Cushion
I discovered these magnetic pin cushions quite a while ago. But I could make one for a lot less. I took a soap dish from the Dollar Tree and added a magnet, and it worked great. Then I discovered these handy magnetic tool bowls at Harbor Freight for $2.99, and they work too, and they are a lot less expensive than the ones in the sewing section of my favorite sewing stores! I love looking for handy gadgets at Harbor Freight. They have lots of items for crafters and sewers alike!
Tip #3 Seam Allowance Guide
There are many seam guides in stores to help guide a straight seam allowance, and I found a few convenient tools. The most straightforward idea is to add a rubber band around your sewing machine arm and use it to guide your fabric.
But, I also discovered that Sew Steady had a Free Motion Quilting Slider Mat. It is 12×20 and fits perfectly on my sewing machine, and is another of my fun sewing tips!
Tip #4 Thread a Needle
I don’t know about you, but the older I get, the harder it is to thread a needle. You have to try out this tip! I picked up a hair spray bottle at the Dollar Tree, and I keep it with my other sewing supplies. Spray a little on the end of your thread, and it will stiffen your thread and make it much easier to thread!
Tip #5 Pin Sharpener
I have those pins that seem to be dull as can be, and I use to end up just throwing them away. Then I saw this idea and had to try it. Add some Steel Wool to a pincushion, and never have a dull pin again!
Tip #6 Fabric Storage
I love this fabric storage idea I saw on Pinterest! The one on Pinterest was using Fabric Organizer Boards from Amazon. I decided I could make my own using foam board from Dollar Tree. I took a piece of foam board and cut it down to 10 x 7.5. You can get eight from one foam board.
It is as easy as wrapping the fabric around the foam board. The great thing about using foam board is that I just used pins to secure the loose ends. Then I picked up a few bins, and I organize my fabric on my shelves by color.
Tip #7 Pattern Weights
When I learned to sew as a young girl, everyone used pins to secure a pattern piece. Now you see people using pattern weights. So why not use large washers for pattern weights. I added some colorful string to my washers, and they work great!
Tip #8 Pipe Cleaners
I love this idea of cleaning my machine. My machine came with a small brush to clean the lint, but it only reaches so far. I saw this idea, and it works great. I purchased some pipe cleaners for a crafting project, so I had some on hand. Fold a pipe cleaner in half and twist it. Then insert it into your machine and pull out lint! I keep these handy in my sewing machine draw, and they are even reusable. Just pull off the lint and clean again!
Tip #9 Storing Bobbins
I saw this idea and had to try it. I picked up some pedicure sets at the Dollar Tree and use the toe separators as bobbin holders! The toe separators work great to keep all my bobbins organized!
Tip #10 Testing Stitches
Last but not least of my Sewing Tips. I always have some scrap material next to my sewing machine. I use it to test my stitches before I start sewing. If I am doing a zig-zag stitch, I know what the stitch will look like, and I make sure that my machine is ready to go!
