Sublimation Tie-Dye Shirt is all over Pinterest, and in this tutorial, I’ll show you how to make a sublimation Tie-Dye shirt with a design from Design Bundles. This project is so much fun, and the outcome is beautiful!
I love to use Sublimation to make T-Shirts. A few weeks ago, I shared how to make some Patriotic T-Shirts. That tutorial is HERE! I remember making Tie-Dye shirts as a kid using rubber bands and dye. This version of Tie-Dye is so much faster and easier.
This week I’ll show how to do sublimation tie-dye shirts and how you can easily add a design.
Tie-Dye Design
So you ask what first. There are some basic supplies you will need for this Sublimation Tie-Dye project. The first item you need is a Tie-Dye design. That is where I will help you out. HERE is a link to the Tie-Dye picture I am using in the tutorial. Then if you want to add a saying or image, you will want to print that out also. I used an image from DESIGNBUNDLES.com.
Printing Tie-Dye Image
You will need to print your images out on Sublimation Paper with Sublimation Ink. I used 8.5×11” A-Sub Paper to print my pictures. Cosmo Ink is the Sublimation Ink that I like to use.
The colors are so vibrant. I also select the option for a borderless print for the background, the Tie-Dye picture. This option will print the entire page. Another option is to print on larger paper if your printer has the capabilities. I also use 8.5×14″ or 11×17″ depending on the size of the shirt I am using.

Check out the video tutorial below or follow the step-by-step instructions below! You choose how you want to learn to do this project!
Step #1
I set my heat press at 390 degrees for 60 seconds.
Step #2
Print your Designs. I print two sheets of the Tie-Dye design and one of the image for the front. Make sure if your design contains words that you print it in “MIRROR” image format.
Step #3
Place a piece of butcher paper down on your heat-press to protect it. This step will help protect your heat press from any blowout ink!
Place your shirt on top of the butcher paper. I like to start with the back of the shirt first. I scrunch up the layers towards the center, making sure to pull in the sleeves. Next, place the Tie-Dye design face down on the shirt and cover it with another piece of butcher paper. Double-check to make sure your shirt is scrunched under the Tie-Dye design. You can use heat-resistant tape to secure your design in place if you want. I did not use it in the tutorial.
Step #4
Press the shirt for 60 seconds at 390 degrees. When the time is up, remove the top sheet of butcher paper and the design. Now take the shirt out and check out the design.
Step #5
Now it is time to do the front of the shirt. You will have an added step for the front if you want to add a design to the front. If you wish to Tie-Dye the shirt with no design, repeat Step #4. If you’re going to add a design, you want to make sure the Tie-Dye does not cover the front of the shirt where you want your design. I first cover my heat press with another piece of butcher paper and then lay the shirt on top of the butcher paper and lay the design on the shirt where you want it to be.
I like to center mine and use the three-fingered measurements from the neck to determine how far down to place the design. Now very carefully scrunch up the front of the shirt around the design. Once you have it scrunched up, make sure to remove the design. Then place the second sheet of Tie-Dye face down on top of the shirt, cover with butcher paper, and press the shirts for 60 seconds at 390 degrees. Remove the butcher paper and Tie-Dye sheet and smooth out your shirt.
Step #6
Now it is time to add your design to the front. I like to cover my shirt with butcher paper and give it a quick press to smooth out the wrinkles. I press for about 10 seconds. Then take your lint roller and run it over the shirt to ensure you do not have any lint where you want to place your design. Next, lay your design down and secure it with heat-resistant tape. Cover it with a clean sheet of butcher paper and press for 60 seconds at 390 degrees.
There you have it, a Tie-Dye shirt with a design. What do you think? Are you going to make one. If you do, please tag us on social media. We would love to see your creation!
