I don’t know about you, but I love to wear hats! Have you noticed all the fun saying on hats? Why not make your own. I am excited to show you how to sublimate and make your hat patch. In the tutorial I will also share with you how to add the patch to the hat with a no-sew method.
100% polyester fabric makes great patches and I found some at JoAnns in the upholstery section to make these patches. It sublimates beautifully. You need to cut the material down to the size of the patch you want and fray the edges. You can use these patches on other items too. What about patches on purses, flower pots, baskets, etc.

Check out the video tutorial below or follow the step by step instructions below! You choose how you want to learn to make this project!
Step 1: Choose Your Fabric
I like to use 100% Polyester fabric. The fabric that I used has a burlap-like weave to it. Make sure to check out the upholstery or outdoor fabric. You will find that there are many options for 100% Polyester in those sections in your fabric store.
Step 2: Press Your Design
I like to press more than one design at a time. I print out multiply designs on 8×10 A-Sub paper. Then I cut my fabric to be the same size as my prints. Just remember you want enough space around your image to allow you to fray the edges. I like to press at 375 degrees for 60 seconds with medium pressure. The medium pressure works excellent for a fabric that has a weave to it.
Step 3: Cut and Fray
Now it is time to cut out your designs. I like to leave about 1/4 to 1/2 inches around my design for fraying. Then I use a weeding tool, or you could use a seam ripper or any sharp pointy tool. Then carefully pull fabric threads off the edges. Continue until you get the frayed effect you want. Trim and edges if needed.
Now you want to add some Dritz Fray Check to stop your patch from continuing to fray. The Fray Check goes on wet, but it dries clear. You need to dab a small amount around the edges.
Step 4: Apply Your Adhesive
Ok, let’s add the patch to our hat. I found a great deal on hats at JiffyShirts.com. They have lots of options for hats. Make sure to check it out! There are a few methods to add the patch to the hat, but I like this method the best. I picked up some fabric adhesive to use for this step. Apply the adhesive to the back of the patch and then lay it on the hat.
It is as simple as that to add it to your hat! This adhesive works excellent, and I have not had any issues with the patch coming off!
