I love make coasters, they make such a great handmade gift. These fold and turn coasters are an excellent project for fat quarters.Who doesn’t love pretty coasters? One of my first blog posts was on making coasters with Napkins. If you want to check it out, here is a quick LINK!
Coasters can cheer up a table, a room, or even your patio. Just think about the smile it will bring to your face as you are enjoying a cup of coffee or even a cocktail. Just think how often you can make someone else smile with a coaster set made just for them. We all need to smile more often.
I posted a blog post last year on making Hot Pads.
The method to make these coasters is the same as the hot pads, just on a smaller scale. I have seen other people refer to this method as the fold and turn, the key steps for making these coasters. These coasters are easy and fun to make! You can make some that are Holiday themed or make some to match your decor.
Fold and turn coasters are an excellent project for fat quarters. I picked up a fat quarter set to make these Christmas coasters. The set came with five-fat quarters in different prints. You could also use Pre-Cut Fat Quarter Squares.

Let’s get started! Check out the video tutorial below or follow the step-by-step instructions below! You choose how you want to learn to make this project!
Cut Fabric
You can use all the same fabric for the coasters, but I like to use five different designs to add some fun. Cut 2 5 “x5” squares from the back and inside piece. They cut 4 5 “x5” out of each of the other fabric designs. The last thing you need to cut is a 5 “x5” square from the 100% cotton batting.
Press Triangles
The four 5” squares that you want to use for the top of the coasters are the ones we will press into triangles. Fold each square to make a triangle and press.
Layer Coasters
Layer 1:
The first layer is the 5” square that you want to use as the back of the coaster. Lay the 5” square face down.
Layer 2:
Lay the batting on top of Layer 1
Layer 3:
Lay the inside 5” square on top of the batting.
Layer 4:
Lay the first triangle on the top of layer three matching corners
Layer 5:
Lay the next triangle on top of layer 4. Match the triangle corner and lay it down.
Layer 6:
Lay the next triangle on top of layer 5. Match the triangle corner and lay it down.
Layer 7:
Place the last triangle in the last corner. Lift the triangle from layer three and slide one-half of the triangle under it.
To finish the layering clip the coaster at each corner to secure them before you sew them together.
Sewing
Now sew a 1/4” seam around all raw edges and clip corners.
Turn Coasters
Now the fun part! Turn from the center and fold each corner out. Once you have it completely turned inside out, push out the corners. I use a bone folder to poke out my corners. Be careful not to poke through your seams.
Finish Coaster
The last step is to give you coast a good press, and there you have it! What do you think? Aren’t these just the cutest and easiest coaster to make? Make three more and have a set of 4. They will look great in your home or wrap a ribbon a set of four and give it as a present!
