Inspiration Friday this week is another up-cycle project using Baking Soda. I don’t know about you, but I see high-end pottery and beautiful clay vases all over social media. I see them in lots of photoshoots. Myklyn, my son’s girlfriend, has been looking for a set to use in an upcoming photoshoot. So I told her we could upcycle some and save her some money.
It’s so easy to up-cycle a vase and make it look high-end with just a few simple ingredients. You probably have the main item in your kitchen.
The secret ingredient is Baking Soda
Adding Baking Soda to Acrylic paint creates a texture that looks just like pottery when it is dry. The mixture is perfect for up-cycling vases. Suppose you don’t have any old vases, then pick some up at your local thrift store. Myklyn found a pair at Marshals for $4.00.
I love how this mixture takes a glass vase and makes it look like an expensive piece of pottery!
Let’s Make Baking Soda Paint
This project is so simple. YOu only need a few items.
- 1 cup of acrylic paint
- 1/4 cup of baking soda
- Vase either ceramic or glass.
- Paintbrush (Chip Brush)
Check out the video tutorial below or follow the step by step instructions below! You choose how you want to learn to make this project!
Step 1 Mixing
I mix the baking soda and paint in a bowl. First, I add the paint to the bowl and slowly add the Baking Soda. You want to mix slowly. It will start to form thick chalk-like paint.
Step 2 Add to Vase
Apply the baking soda and paint mixture with a paintbrush to the vase. I like to use a chip paintbrush. I paint the entire vase all-over with one coat and then let it dry for a few minutes. When it is still tacking, I take my paintbrush and add a design to the baking soda paint mixture. I think this is what gives the vase a high-end look.
Most of the vases I have done only needed one coat of the mixture, but you could add a second coat. One tip is that if you add a second coat, make sure your first coat is dry before adding the second coat.
How easy was that to upcycle a vase? All you have to do now is let it dry. If you want to give your vase a protective finish, you can add a thin layer of clear matte finish. I like to use spray paint to add the matte finish.
Here is a the vase used in MyklynJo Photography’s latest photoshoot. The vase looks so much like her inspiration vase and for so much less money!
This technique can be used on lots of other items. I did a project with it when I upcycled some wooden candles sticks. It also works excellent on bowls or even on a lamp. I love finding new ways to bring new life to something old or thrown away.
I would love to see what you paint! If this project inspired you, then check out some of my other projects for more inspiration!
