Technique 1 ~ Mitered Corners
In the first technique, I will show you how to create beautifully sharp, clean corners on napkins. This technique is called mitering, and it involves cutting the napkin along each corner before folding. This method creates crisp edges that fit snugly together and minimizes the bulk of the napkin. And best of all, mitering is fast and easy – anyone can do it! So if you’re looking for a quick and effective way to create beautifully neat napkins with clean corners, stay tuned as I show you exactly how it’s done. Let’s get started!
Step 1: Cut Fabric
To start, cut your fabric into squares. I like to cut my fabric 18 “x18”. This will make a 17 “x17” finished napkin. I think this is a perfect size.
Step 2: Clip Corners and Press
Starting with your piece of fabric, clip off a 1 1/2” triangle from each corner.
Then carefully fold over the edges to create a neat, even 1/2” hem on the corner and along all four sides of the napkin.
Next, fold each corner carefully into the center to create crisp, tidy points at each corner. Press each corner.
This will make a 1/4” rolled hem. Now fold over each side 1/4” to create a hem around the napkin.
Step 3: Topstitch Napkin
Topstitching around your napkin is a great way to add a decorative touch. I used a long stitch (length 4). I used a matching thread color, which makes the napkin pop! To topstitch, simply sew around the napkin from the backside. This is a quick and easy way to dress up your napkin, which will surely impress your guests!
Quick Tip
When you’re sewing a napkin, stop with the needle down and pivot each time you get to the corner. This ensures that you catch the folded edge, as shown in the closeup below. I took the photo with the sewing foot lifted so it’s easier to see. This slight adjustment will result in neater, sharper corners on your napkins. So next time you’re sewing napkins, don’t forget to pivot at the corners!
Technique 2 ~ Reversible Napkins
Sewing reversible napkins is a simple way to get two napkins in one, and they’re just as easy to make as traditional napkins. You can use any fabric you like, but I recommend using two different patterns or colors to quickly tell the front from the back.
Step 1: Cut Fabric
The first thing you’ll need to do is cut out your fabric. You’ll need two pieces of fabric for each napkin, so make sure they’re the same size. I like to cut my fabric 18 “x18”. This will create a 17 “x17” finished napkin. I think this is a perfect size.
Step 2: Sew Napkin
Then, put the two pieces of fabric wrong sides together and sew around the edge, leaving a small opening for turning.
Once you’ve sewn around the edge, turn the napkin right side out and press it flat.
Step 3: Top Stitch
Finally, topstitch around the edge to close the opening and give the napkin a nice finished look. That’s all there is to it! Sewing two-layer napkins are quick and easy, and you’ll end up with a professional-looking product that’s sure to impress your guests.
There you have it! Two easy ways to make fabric napkins using supplies you have on hand. I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and that you’ll give one of these techniques a try the next time you need to make napkins.
Bonus Napkin Ring
Let’s make a quick and easy napkin with our new napkins! Using just a few simple supplies, you can easily create your napkin rings to add a unique style to your next table setting. To get started, simply gather some wooden beads and some jute string. Begin by stringing the beads onto the jute. I like to use 10 beads.
Once you have used up all of your beads, simply tie the end of your string into a knot to form a napkin ring that is both functional and beautiful.
Whether used for a casual family dinner or an elegant dinner party, these DIY napkin rings will take your table setting from simple to stunning in no time at all! So why wait? Go ahead and start crafting your own soon – I can’t wait to see how they turn out!
