Do you have a little one that loves snuggling? Or are you looking for a special and unique gift for a baby shower? DIY sensory small blankets are the perfect solution! They are soft, cuddly, and can provide hours of entertainment for babies and toddlers. Plus, they are easy and inexpensive to make! In this tutorial, I will show you how to make your sensory small blanket using an oven bag, Minky fabric, and cotton quilt fabric.
A “crinkle” sensory blanket is a perfect gift for a new baby or small child. They have a special crinkle sound that helps to soothe and calm babies. The crinkle sound is created by the inside layer of the blanket, which is made from an oven bag. The material is safe for babies and toddlers, and it makes a gentle crinkling noise when it is touched. Sensory blankets can help to stimulate a child’s senses and promote cognitive development. They are also a great way to provide comfort and security for a new baby. If you are looking for a unique and thoughtful gift, a sensory blanket is a perfect choice.
Plus, if you’re making a baby quilt, why not make a matching sensory blanket as well? Sensory blankets are great for babies because they help stimulate their senses. The different colors and textures on the blanket can help newborns focus and start to develop their sense of touch. And if you’re worried about Mom and Dad having to lug the quilt around everywhere, don’t worry – the sensory blanket is much smaller and easier to carry. So go ahead and make that baby quilt – and don’t forget the matching sensory blanket!
What You’ll Need for a Crinkle Sensory Blanket:
- 1/2 yard of soft Minky fabric (you can find this at most fabric stores)
- 1/2 yard of another coordinating fabric (quilting cotton or flannel work well)
- or 1/2 yard fleece
- 1 oven bag
- thread
- Snaps
- Wooden Ring
- scissors
- ruler or measuring tape
- sewing machine

Instructions for a Crinkle Sensory Blanket:
Step # 1 – Cut the sensory blanket fabrics
Cut each fabric into an 12″x12″ square.
Step #2 – Cut Oven Bag
Open the oven back up and cut the oven bag into an 12″x12″ square.
Step #3 – Layer the squares
Place the two squares of fabric right sides together, aligning all the edges. Lay the oven bag on top of the two fabric squares. Clip all three layers together.
Step #4 – Sew around the perimeter
Using a 1/4″ seam allowance, sew around all four sides of the blanket. Leave a 3-4″ opening along one side so you can turn the blanket right side out.
Step #4 – Trim the corners and turn right side out
Trim the corners of the blanket, being careful not to cut through the stitching. Turn the blanket right side out through the opening you left, then use a Clover Point 2 Point Turner or a pointy object to push out the corners.
Step #5 – Close the opening and sew a decorative stitch around the perimeter
Sew the opening closed, then stitch around the entire perimeter of the blanket. This will help secure all the layers of fabric and give the blanket a nice finished look.
Step #6 – Add Snaps
Snaps are a great way to add interest and function to a sensory blanket. By adding snaps to the corner of the blanket, you can easily attach a wooden ring. This allows the baby to hold onto the blanket, and also gives the parent the ability to hook the blanket onto a stroller or car seat. Snaps are also a great way to add texture and visual interest to the blanket. By using different colors and sizes of snaps, you can create a blanket that is both fun to look at and fun to touch.
