Sewing Directions for Bowl Cozy
Step #1 Cut Fabric
- Main Fabric – cut 10 “x10” square
- Contrasting Fabric – cut 10 “x10” square
- Batting – cut two 9 1/2″x9 1/2″ square
Step #2 Draw Quilting Lines
Start by placing the main fabric square face down in front of you and lay a piece of cotton batting on top. Get your marking pen ready because it’s time to start drawing – diagonal lines for the Bowl Cozy from each corner and cross the center of each square. Now you have the perfect base for your project. You’re one step closer to making something unique! Repeat the steps contrasting pieces of fabric. Then sew along the diagonal line to secure the batting and fabric together.
Step #3 Draw Darts Lines
It’s time to mark the lines that will give the bowl its shape – also known as darts. We will use the cross lines from step #2 as a starting point, so let’s get up close and personal with our favorite ruler. Measure and mark one inch on either side of the line and then measure down two inches and mark again.
Now it is time to join those dots – literally! Draw a line from the 1-inch marks to the 2-inch marks, and voila! Your darts have instantly appeared, just like magic! Check out the picture for reference. Repeat the steps contrasting pieces of fabric.
Step #4 Sewing Darts
Now that we have the Dart lines marked let’s get to sewing! Start by folding the Dart lines in half and pin them in place – you should have four Dart lines pinned.
After they are all pinned, we can begin to sew along each Dart line. This is really exciting as it’s when your piece starts gaining shape and definition! Get ready to watch as these Dart lines add structure and detail to your bowl, transforming it before your eyes. Repeat the steps for the contrasting fabric.
Clip the darts open. This will help reduce bulk when you view the bowl together.
Step # 5 Sewing Bowl Together
Time to sew up this unique bowl! Grab your main fabric and contrasting fabric and match them right sides together. Make sure all the seams line up and clip everything into place.
It’s time to sew around the edges with a 1/4-inch seam allowance, but don’t forget to leave a 2-inch opening at the end! To make this project even better, ensure you secure your seam at both ends and get ready for the fun part – turning this project into something magical that will be all of yours – how exciting!
Step #5 Right Side Out
After completing all that hard work on your project, it is time to turn it right side out. But, first clip the corners to help reduce bulk.
To do this, use a bone-turner tool to meticulously push out all those anxious corners. Then, topstitch around 1/4” away from the edges and tuck in any tricky edges at the opening. For an extra added bonus, try lengthening your stitch length to 3.5 for a beautiful finish!
Adjust it!
You can use this same pattern to create larger bowls with just a few simple changes! Adjust the square size up and down – 12” or 15”, respectively – and add an extra half inch for each 2-inch dart. Get creative with your bowl designs now!
