The video tutorial is excellent for those who want to see the project come together, and the step-by-step instructions are perfect for those who want a more detailed look at each component. Either way, you’ll be able to create this project with ease! So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
Step #1 Cut Fabric for Fabric Storage Boxes
To craft your fabric boxes, you’ll want to begin by cutting two pieces of 10 x 16 1/2-inch fabric for the outer layer and a second pair from lining material. Then cut out another set with fusible foam, also in 10x 16 1/2 inches. Now you have all the components needed to construct something truly special!
Step #2 Attaching Foam
Now it’s time to affix the outer fabric and foam together! Place your fusible foam with its adhesive side facing up, then layer on top of the outdoor fabric that should have its right side visible. For perfect results when pressing, follow any instructions with your specific foam material – you’ll do this for each piece of outside fabric & foam.
Step #3 Boxed Corners
Give your box the perfect finished look by boxing its corners! Simply grab a marker and draw 3-inch squares at two corners of all four pieces – two outdoor fabrics with foam attached, plus two lining materials. Then carefully snip along these lines using scissors to create that sharp finish!
Step #4 Assemble for Sewing
Time to Sew! Now it’s time to bring the pieces together and get some sewing done. Take both outer fabric and foam, as well as your lining, and place them right sides facing each other before clipping along both sides and at the bottom where you just cut out the 3×3 corners. Remember when you’re working with the lining to leave a 4-inch gap at the bottom – this will be used to turn our project outwards after we finish assembling everything!
Step #5 Sew Fabric Storage Box Seams
Time to get some thread in that needle and stitch up your box seems like a pro! Take both fabric pieces and head over to the sewing machine. Sew down each side and cross the bottom using a 3/8-inch seam allowance – remembering not to sew along where you left an opening on the lining piece.
Step #6 Boxed Corners
It’s time to start securing those corners – line up the bottom and side seams, then clip together and sew a seam with a 3/8-inch seam allowance!
Step #7 Attach Lining and Outer Fabric
Next, position the main fabric box inside its lining, ensuring their right sides face each other. Pin or clip the top edge together before stitching a 3/8-inch seam.
Flip your project right side out through the gap you left in the lining and push out edges to complete – you should be left with perfect corner detailing!
Now all you need to do is close the gap in the lining with a quick zig-zag stitch on your machine and add a top stitch to the top of your box to finish it off.
I like to clip my top edge and press before I add the top stitch. I lengthen my stitch length to 3.5mm for topstitching. It helps make the fabric lay nice and smooth.
It’s done! Get ready to organize all your fat quarters in this new, adorable fabric storage box. It’ll be the perfect place for them and make you so organized and stylish!
