I love making trays for all types of occasions. I have them in my kitchen, my camper, and on my coffee table. Today we are going to make a metal tray that I hope inspires some creativity. Using epoxy resin may seem daunting at first, but it is straightforward to use. I love the shiny glass-like look that the resin finish leaves. Check out the fantastic finish on this DIY Metal Epoxy Tray! This project is a combination of vinyl and epoxy resin.
You find epoxy resin used in different types of crafts. I have been using it with Tumblers for quite some time. So I thought it would be fun to add it to trays. I start by designing an image in Design Space for the tray. After you transfer the image to the tray, the next step is to Epoxy it!
The epoxy is easy to use and has low toxicity compared to polyester resin. The epoxy resin comes in two parts: resin and hardener, I call it Part A and Part B. The two parts are mixed, then poured into the tray, which then sets hard. The epoxy resin is suitable to pour over almost anything, and trays are the perfect resin starter project. You will love the finish of these trays, and they make beautiful gifts. I used a metal tray for this project, but you could also use a wooden tray.

SUPPLIES
MIXING EPOXY RESIN
Epoxy has precise instructions, and I have learned that you want to make sure you follow precisely; otherwise, the epoxy may not harden for you.
- Use equal amounts of resin and hardener.
- Measure Part A into a small measuring cup
- Measure Part B into a small measuring cup
- Combine each part into a new cup
- Mix slowly for 2 minutes. I use a popsicle stick.
- Pour the mixed epoxy into the tray
- This measurement turned out to make 4 tablespoons total, 2 of each, part A and part B
POUR OVER YOUR DESIGN/IMAGE
Once thoroughly mixed, pour the resin into the tray. You can use your gloved finger or stir stick to make sure the resin flows to all edges. I use my hairdryer or heat gun to pop any air pockets or bubbles.
SETTING TIME
Let the epoxy resin cure for 72 hours, where no one will bump it, and nothing will fall on it. After 24, it will be pretty firm, but for a glass-like finish – it needs 72 hours. Or potentially a bit more if it’s hot where you live.
BEAUTIFUL REFLECTION
The epoxy resin adds fantastic texture and depth to the serving tray and will ensure that your vinyl design will last forever. I hope you like this DIY Metal Epoxy Tray project!
