It’s finally time for a sewing project. I’m excited to share with you a simple, fully lined, easy to make Drawstring Backpack. A practical and perfect project and it has so many uses. The backpack will be great for your next day trip or your next trip to the gym. These backpacks would be great for kids that are getting ready to go back to school. I love that this project is perfect for any level of sewing. I also love that it uses fat quarters that you can find at any store that carries material.
So let get ready and start.

DRAWSTRING BACKPACK STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS :
Step #1 Cutting Backpack Pieces
- Exterior fabric cut: two (2) – 14” wide x 15’’
- Lining fabric cut: two (2) – 14” wide x 15”
- Top Casing: four (4) – 3” wide x 13”
- Tabs: One (1) 7” x 1 1/2”
- Cording: Two (2) 65” long pieces
Step #2 Tabs
Fold and press the tab in half and then fold each end into the middle and fold over. Then topstitch along the pressed edge using 1/8” seam allowance. Then fold the strip in half and cut. You should now have two tabs.
Step #3 Insert Tabs
Lay one exterior panel on a flat work surface and measure up 1” from the bottom of each side.
Fold the tab in half and lay and clip to the right side of the fabric on the 1” line.
Now lay exterior panels right sides together, pin or clip. Stitch along three edges. Make sure to leave the top open. I used a 3/8” seam. Clip the two bottom corners to reduce bulk.
Turn the fabric right side out.
Step #4 Add Casing
Now it is time to work on the top casing. Take the 4 – 3” X 13” Top Casing pieces and match two pieces right sides together. Repeat with the other two pieces. Stitch three sides together.
Clip the two bottom corners to reduce build and then turn and press. Fold them length-wise and clip the raw edges of the Casing top to the right sides of the exterior panels. Set aside.
Step #5 Lining
Place lining panels right sides together and clip.
Mark a 3” inch opening at the bottom. You will want to leave a gap to turn the backpack right side out.
Now stitch along the side and bottom edges using a 3/8” seam. Clip the corners.
Step #6 Assembling Backpack
Insert exterior into lining with right sides together.
Line up side seams and clip. Then clip along the raw edge.
Make sure that your top casing is sandwiched between the lining and exterior panels. Stitch along the top edge using 1/4” seam. Now it is time to turn the backpack right side out.
Step #7 Add Cord
Now it is time to thread the code through the top casing. Pull the cord through the casing at the top of the bag in opposite directions. I used a large safety pin on the end of the cord to push it through the case. When you are done, you’ll have two ends of cord coming out each side of the top of the bag.
On one side, thread one end of the cord through the loop at the bottom of the bag. Tie the two loose ends together. Repeat on the other side.
We have a fully lined drawstring backpack there, and we made it in less than 1 hour. I think I might make one for my niece since she will be starting school next month. These would make great gifts for all types of occasions.
