Have you noticed that the Home and Decor stores always display pillowcases with beautiful colors and fun accents? Today I want to show you how to make your own custom pillowcase. I learned a fun technique to give the pillowcase a tailored and professional look. In fact, this is such a fun and easy project you can whip out a few sets in an afternoon! They also make great gifts.
HOW TO MAKE PILLOWCASE
Most pillowcases in the stores come in three sizes – Standard, Queen, and King. So let’s talk about how much fabric to buy for each size pillowcase:
Section | Standard | Queen | King |
Main Fabric | 3/4 Yard | 3/4 Yard | 1 Yard |
Cuff Fabric | 1/4 Yard | 1/4 Yard | 1/4 Yard |
Trim Fabric | 1/4 Yard | 1/4 Yard | 1/4 Yard |
Cotton fabric is the best fabric to buy for pillowcases. The cotton will breathe and give you a great night’s sleep. I like to use quilters cotton. I choose contrasting fabrics for the cuff and trim to add a splash of color and match my bedroom colors. If you are making the pillowcases for your kids think of their favorite super heroes. There are so many choices at the fabric stores.

Check out the video tutorial below or follow the step by step instructions below! You choose how you want to learn to make this project!
Step 1: Cut Fabric
I made my pillowcases queen size, but you can adjust to the size you need. Below is the measurements for each size pillow:
Section | Standard | Queen | King |
Main Fabric | 41″x23″ | 41″x27 | 41″x33″ |
Cuff Fabric | 41″x9″ | 41″x9″ | 41″x9″ |
Trim Fabric | 41×2″ | 41″x2″ | 41″x2″ |
Step 2: Iron Trim
Fold your trim piece WRONG sides together lengthwise and press. Make sure your raw edges are lined up straight!
Step 3: Add Border Piece
Place the border piece down in front of you, with the RIGHT side of the fabric facing up. Place the folded trim piece’s raw edges along the top edge of the border piece clip or pin in place.
Step 4: Assembly All Pieces
Take the MAIN piece and lay it WRONG side down on top of the trim and border pieces. Match up the raw edges and pin or clip along the top. You should have all three parts of the pillowcase clipped at this point.
Step 5: Burrito Style
Now it is time for the Burrito wrap! Roll or fold up the MAIN section of the pillowcase. This helps to get it out of the way.
Then fold up the bottom edge of the CUFF over the MAIN section you just rolled and line up the raw edges and clip. Once you have it clipped or pinned, the CUFF piece should completely encase the MAIN and TRIM pieces of the pillowcase. Before we sew the edges in the next step, make sure that your MAIN section is rolled inside the CUFF piece.
Step 6: Sew
Sew along the edge that you have clipped or pinned. Make sure to backstitch to secure the seam at the start and end.
Step 7: Pull Burrito Apart
Next, we want to pull out the MAIN section. Start at one end, begin pulling the MAIN section out from the inside of the “burrito.” Just keep pulling until the CUFF starts to turn itself RIGHT side out as you pull.
When it is completely turned out, lay it flat and give it a good press.
Step 8– French seam
Now I know French Seams sounds really fancy and maybe a little intimidating, but it’s not hard, and you will like the results. So fold your pillowcase in half with the WRONG sides together and match the raw edges. Stitch along the side and bottom, 1/4 inch from the edge. It sounds funny that you have the WRONG sides together but don’t worry it works.
Trim the seam to 1/8 inch and clip the bottom corner.
Now turn your pillowcase the WRONG way out and press the seam.
Then stitch around the seam again 1/4 inch from the edge. I like to use my sewing foot as a guide. This seam will encase our last seam and stop your seams from fraying in the wash.
Turn the pillowcase the right way out again and give it a good press.
