Are you looking for a great gift idea? These coaster sets are fun and easy to make. I picked up some 4″ square ceramic tiles at my local Habitat for Humanity. Then using some decorative paper napkins I turned them into a set of very cute coasters. Use a picture in place of the napkin and get a very personalized gift. You can also add a spark of color to any room by using your favorite scrapbook paper.
Supplies:
4-4″ square ceramic tiles
Dishwasher Safe Mod Podge
Small paint brush
Decorative paper napkins, favorite pictures or scrapbook paper
Furniture felt pads
Step One: Napkin Option
Most napkins are 2-ply. You will want to separate the 2-ply. The video will show this step. Once you have it separated find a pretty spot on it. Cut approximately a 5×5 inch square to use. Then brush the tile tops and their edges with a coat of Mod Podge. Carefully center the image on your tile and then apply them to the tile, making sure you fold the napkin down to cover the edges.
Step One: Picture or Scrapbook Paper Option:
Cut a 4×4 inch square from a picture that you printed on regular copy paper. The other option is to cut a 4×4 square from your favorite scrapbook paper. Then brush the tile top with a coat of Mod Podge. Carefully center the image on your tile and then apply it to the tile. The picture or scrapbook paper should fit the tile and not hang over the edge like the napkin option did.
Step Two: Top Coat and Baking
For both options you will then apply a layer of Mod Podge on the top of the image. You can use a piece of plastic wrap to smooth our any wrinkles. The video will show this step. Then place the tiles in a cold oven and set the temperature to 170 degrees and set the timer for 10 minutes. This speeds up the process and gives a good hard first layer to the tile.
Step Three: Edge Finish and Top Coat
When you remove the tile(s) from the oven you can address the edges on the napkin option. Leaving them ripped, gives them a ‘hand painted’ look. If you want a more polished look, use a bit of sandpaper or nail file to sand off the napkin from the edges.
Then, apply a second coat of dishwasher safe mod lodge. Completely cover the edges. Then place it in the oven at 170 degrees for 10 minutes.
Step Four: Felt Pads
Finish up by applying felt pads to the bottom of the coasters. And that’s it! Here’s a couple different ones completed.

I love everything you are doing. I think the coaster set would be easiest for me to start on. Did you make the holder for the coasters also?
No I did not make a holder. When I gave them as a present I just tied a bow of Rafa around them! I am glad you like what I am doing. If you have something you would like a tutorial please let me know!
