It’s the middle of summer, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get into the Christmas spirit! This week’s project is the last in my series of Christmas in July. This week we are making a gnome using yarn or macrame cording and a wooden ring. I’ll show you how to make him in a step-by-step tutorial below or with a video. So put on your favorite Christmas movie, and let’s get started!
Gnomes are a popular Christmas decoration and for a good reason! They’re cute, cheerful, and easy to make. You can find gnomes in all different sizes and styles, but they all have one thing in common: they bring the spirit of Christmas into your home.
Making your gnome is a great way to add a personal touch to your holiday decorating. Plus, it’s a fun project that the whole family can enjoy. So gather up your supplies, and let’s get started!
You’ll need a few supplies for this project, most of which you probably already have around the house. You can use either yarn or macrame cord for the hat and beard of your gnome. I used macrame cored since I had it on hand. But yarn works great too! The choice is up to you!
Toilet paper rolls are often overlooked as a crafting resource, but they can be used to make all sorts of things! In this project, we’ll use them to make a hat’s brim. Toilet paper rolls are perfect because they’re sturdy but lightweight and can be easily decorated. So next time you finish a toilet paper roll, don’t throw it away – save it for your next craft project!

Either way, you’ll be able to create this project with ease! So what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
Now that you have all your supplies let’s start making our gnome!
Step #1 Prepping Macrame Cord
To start with, I like to cut my macrame cord to size. I cut the Hat cord at 16 inches and the Beard cord at 10 inches. The number of strings you will need depend on the thickness of your cord or yarn. I would suggest that you start with 10 for the hat and 5 for the beard if you are using macrame cord.
Then I separated the cord into strands.
Step #2 Create Gnome Hat
Now, grab a toilet paper roll and cut off about 1 inch to 3/4 inch to create the hat brim. This will serve as the hat brim.
Now it’s time to start adding the macrame. Take your first strand of the hat cording and fold it in half.
Pull the cord through the center of the hat brim and pull the cording through the folded section of the cord to secure it around the brim. Continue this process until you have added all the cord strands around the brim.
Once you have finished adding the cord, pull all the cord through the center of the hat brim. This process will hide the knot that we made in the last step.
Let’s comb and trim off any excess cord and tie a knot around the top to create a top for our hat and add a hanger.
So now you have a cute and unique Macrame hat that is perfect for your gnome. Add a cotton ball to the hat.
Step #3 Create Gnome Beard
Next, let’s create the beard for our gnome. To create the beard, you will need the wooden ring and the cording for the beard. Securing the beard to the wooden ring is the same as we used in our last step. Don’t forget to comb out your beard when you are done!
Step #4 Add a Nose to your Gnome
Adding the nose is the final touch to creating a gnome. Add a little dab of glue in the center of the beard is all needed before adding the nose.
Give the nose a slight wiggle to make sure it is secure.
Step #5 Finish Gnome
Now that you have all the pieces to your gnome, it’s time to put it together. All you need to do is add the hat to the wooden ring.
Once you’ve done that, your gnome is finished unless you want to trim his beard!
There are endless ways to display your gnome. You can hang him on the mantel, shelf, or windowsill. He can hang in the Christmas tree or nestle among some holiday greenery. Wherever you choose to put him, he’s sure to bring a smile to your face.
